Introducing the three vitamin trio who help collagen

1. Vitamin C to promote collagen synthesis2. Vitamin E
to reduce collagen breakdown 3. Combination to boost collagen synthesis, vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E

Hello. I'm a pharmacist Jinny.

Recently, more and more people are taking collagen for skin health. However, not all collagen is used as connective tissue in the body even if it is supplemented in sufficient amounts, and it can be broken down by various environmental factors.

Therefore, in order to receive more direct benefits for skin health through collagen intake, it is important to supplement it with nutrients that help collagen synthesis. Today, for a smarter collagen intake, we would like to introduce you to three vitamins that are responsible for synergy with collagen.

1. Vitamin C promotes collagen synthesis

I don't think there are many people who don't know about the benefits/effects of vitamin C. It's found in almost every multivitamin on the market, and it's widely used as a drink when you need to stay up all night or as an infusion when you're feeling sick. But did you know that vitamin C also plays an important role in collagen synthesis? That's why a lack of vitamin C leads to scurvy, which weakens tissues such as gums and muscles.

In 1998, a paper was published in Int J Cosmet SCI that studied the effects of vitamin C on normal collagen synthesis in the human body.

"Thus, vitamin C promotes the synthesis of normal mature collagen networks by maintaining optimal lysyl and prolyl hydroxylase activity."

2. Vitamin E to reduce collagen breakdown

Less is known about the benefits/effects of vitamin E compared to vitamin C. However, vitamin E is a very important antioxidant nutrient in that it fights free radicals, which are the remnants of oxygen and nutrients in the body.

The antioxidant activity of vitamin E also has a significant impact on collagen, which makes up tissues. A 1994 paper in J Clin Periodontol showed that vitamin E acts as an antioxidant and reduces collagen breakdown [2].

"As a result, the antioxidants vitamin E and selenium reduce collagen breakdown in granulation tissue in experiments."

3. Combination to Amplify Collagen Synthesis, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin E

In addition, a 2004 study was published in Biomed Pharmacother comparing collagen synthesis results with vitamins A, C, and E, either individually or together [3].

"As expected, ascorbate (vitamin C) stimulated collagen accumulation. The effect was amplified by the presence of three vitamins (vitamin A, vitamin C, and vitamin E)."

Today, we've looked at three vitamins that help collagen. However, no matter how hard you try to supplement these nutrients, UV rays reduce the rate of collagen synthesis, so you should always pay attention to sun protection for the health of your skin.

I hope you have a healthy day in body and mind. It was Jinny.
