If you eat it, you will fall out, the surprising effect of catechins

1. Improve body weight, fat mass, waist circumference, and fat area2.
Reduces cholesterol and triglycerides
3. Relieves diabetes

Hello. I'm a pharmacist Jinny.

There have been so many diet ingredients, but the most recognizable ones are Garcinia Cambogia Extract and Green Tea Extract. Garcinia cambogia has already been introduced before, so today we are going to take a look at green tea extract.

Green tea has a variety of ingredients, including caffeine and theanine, but it is largely due to the ingredients called catechins that make green tea a diet food. Catechins are a type of polyphenol found in green tea that gives green tea its astringent taste.

Catechins are primarily known to help with weight loss by increasing fat oxidation, as well as cardiovascular health through their antioxidant activity. In addition, it has been shown to have a wide variety of health benefits, including antibacterial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and anti-diabetic.

Now, let's take a closer look at the benefits of catechins through research.

1. Improvement of body weight, fat mass, waist circumference, and fat area

If you compare diet supplements in terms of diet effectiveness alone, catechins are among the top of the list. That's why most diet supplements on the market contain green tea extract catechins.

When you consume catechins, your body is metabolically active, allowing stored fat to be converted into energy more quickly. Your body burns fat faster. As a result, there is a decrease in body fat.

In this regard, I would like to introduce the results of a large-scale human application test on 240 people. 240 men and women with visceral fat-type obesity were divided into intake and control groups, and only the intake group was given 583 mg of catechins per day. Only in the intake group did the following significant improvements be seen [1].

"The reductions in body weight, body mass index, body fat ratio, fat mass, waist circumference, hip circumference, visceral fat area, and subcutaneous fat area were greater in the catechin-supplemented group than in the control group."

2. Reduces cholesterol and triglycerides

The reason why we need to be careful about obesity is that it can lead to complications such as hyperlipidemia and diabetes. Hyperlipidemia is a condition in which cholesterol and triglycerides are high in the blood. It's just that there's a lot of oil in the blood. Hyperlipidemia slowly breaks down blood vessels without any symptoms, making it a risk factor for atherosclerosis. Therefore, in order to prevent adult diseases, it is important not only to manage your weight, but also to check your blood lipid levels through regular blood tests.

In 2018, we would like to introduce the results of the clinical trial of catechins in patients with mild hypercholesterolemia. Sixty patients were divided into three groups, each given a catechin-containing green tea, catechin-containing oolong tea, and a placebo.

After 12 weeks, the group that drank catechin-containing green tea and catechin-containing oolong tea showed significant reductions in body weight, body fat, as well as total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides. It has even been shown that mild fatty liver conditions can be restored to normal liver [2].

"Drinking CEGT (catechin-fortified green tea) and CEOT (catechin-fortified oolong tea) significantly reduced body weight, fat, BMI, lipid peroxidation, and lipid profile (total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, and triglycerides). In addition, the intervention of CEGT and CEOT significantly improved oxidation index (TEAC and GSH) and antioxidant enzymes (SOD, CAT, GPx, and GR). In addition, ultrasonography supported the hepatoprotective activity of CEGT and CEOT by returning mild fatty liver to normal liver status due to antioxidant and lipid-lowering activity."

3. Relieves diabetes

As mentioned earlier, it is known that the more obese you are, the higher the prevalence of diabetes. When you become obese, insulin resistance increases. Increased insulin resistance leads to poor blood sugar control, so the pancreas continues to secrete more insulin to control blood sugar.

And if the pancreas is overworked for a long time, you end up with diabetes. So, if you're obese or pre-diabetic, losing weight isn't an option, it's a necessity.

There have been mounting reports that the consumption of catechins can help with weight control as well as in alleviating diabetes. A review paper published last year in the prestigious journal Nutrients reviewed 180 prior studies and reported [3].

"Catechins alleviate diabetes by improving insulin resistance, relieving oxidative stress, regulating mitochondrial function, relieving endoplasmic reticulum stress, producing anti-inflammatory effects, reducing blood sugar sources, and regulating bowel function."

Today, we've looked at diet supplements, green tea extract and catechins. Studies have shown that not only does it have a great effect on dieting if it is consumed regularly, but it also seems to be of practical help in preventing and managing various adult diseases. In fact, people around me who took catechins while dieting had good diet results.

However, due to the nature of green tea extract, it may contain a small amount of caffeine. Therefore, people who are sensitive to caffeine should be careful about consuming it, and it is also good to know that you may experience symptoms such as slight nervousness or sleeplessness when consuming it.

In addition, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety recommends that children, pregnant women, and lactating women avoid consuming it, and patients with liver disease should consult a doctor.

So, I hope you have a healthy day in body and mind. It was Jinny.
