3 Benefits of Squid Cartilage Chondroitin
1. Promote osteoblast growth2. Promotes collagen accumulation
3. Inhibition of osteoclast differentiation

Hello. I'm a pharmacist Jinny.

If I had to pick a nutritional supplement that has been loved by many people lately, it would probably be chondroitin. You usually take a lot of chondroitin supplements extracted from shark or bovine cartilage. Today, I would like to introduce you to 'squid cartilage chondroitin', which is attracting new attention as a dark horse in academia.

Chondroitin has different types and efficacy depending on the source of the extract. Chondroitin found in bovine cartilage is either type A or C, while chondroitin found in shark cartilage is type C or D. And chondroitin, which is extracted from squid cartilage, belongs to type E.

So, what are the benefits of E-type chondroitin? In conclusion, E chondroitin may support joint cartilage health, as well as bone health by stimulating bone formation and inhibiting its breakdown. Now, in my paper, I will tell you in detail about chondroitin type E, which is extracted from squid cartilage.

1. Stimulates osteoblast growth

Bone is a tissue that maintains a certain density by balancing the actions of osteoblasts, which make bone, and osteoclasts, which destroy bone. Therefore, osteoporosis occurs with age because the action of osteoclasts becomes more dominant than that of osteoblasts. Women, in particular, are more susceptible to osteoporosis due to the decrease in the female hormone estrogen and the stimulation of osteoclasts.

In this regard, I would like to introduce a cell experiment that studied the effect of E-type chondroitin extracted from squid cartilage on osteoblasts. The experiment, conducted by Japanese researchers, was published in the Journal of cellular physiology in 2008.

When the researchers administered different types of chondroitin to osteoblasts, they found that, unlike C and D chondroitins, E chondroitin promoted osteoblast growth at much lower concentrations [1].

"C-type chondroitin and D-type chondroitin did not have any effect on the growth of MC3T3-E1 cells (osteoblasts) at 100 mg/ml concentrations, whereas E-type chondroitin significantly promoted the growth of osteoblasts at 20 mg/ml and 100 mg/ml concentrations."

2. Promotes collagen accumulation

Many people think of collagen as an inner beauty ingredient. In fact, collagen is a very important component of joint cartilage and bone. However, as we age, the synthesis of collagen in the body decreases and its breakdown accelerates, weakening cartilage and bones.

Therefore, academia is using collagen in the body as an indicator of cartilage and bone health, and is researching ingredients that help collagen synthesis. E-type chondroitin, which is derived from squid cartilage, is an ingredient that can help improve collagen in the body.

In the aforementioned experiments, it was confirmed that the treatment of E-type chondroitin extracted from squid cartilage on osteoblasts promoted the accumulation of collagen. We have also found that, unlike type A and type C chondroitin, only type E chondroitin increases the constituents of collagen [2].

"E-type chondroitin enhanced the accumulation of collagen by MC3T3-E1 cells (osteoblasts). In addition, the hydroxyproline content of osteoblasts was upregulated by E-type chondroitin, while it was not weakly downregulated or altered by A-type chondroitin and C-type chondroitin."

3. Inhibition of osteoclast differentiation

Earlier, we said that osteoporosis is related to the overactivation of osteoclasts compared to osteoblasts.

According to an experiment published in the Dental materials journal, another SCI-level journal, E-type chondroitin extracted from squid cartilage inhibits the differentiation of osteoclasts. Commenting on the results of these experiments, the researchers wrote, "E-type chondroitin has the potential to be a component in the treatment of bone defects" [3].

"Chondroitin A and chondroitin C had no effect on osteoclast differentiation, whereas E-type chondroitin significantly inhibited the expression of TRAP-positive multinucleated cells (osteoclasts)."

Today, we looked at the joint cartilage and bone health benefits of E-type chondroitin extracted from squid cartilage. E-type chondroitin is being researched as a new material that helps bone health by activating osteoblasts and promoting collagen accumulation while inhibiting osteoclasts.

Chondroitin itself is very well known, but I think you may have learned that there are different types of chondroitin and that chondroitin extracted from squid cartilage is the first time you know about it. In the future, we will continue to inform you more quickly about the new good ingredients being researched in academia.

So, I hope you have a healthy day in body and mind. It was Jinny.
