Hello. I'm a pharmacist Jinny.

What is the most important factor in maintaining good health? I prioritize two things: nutrition and sleep. If nutrition is what provides the components and fuel for the smooth functioning of our body, then sleep is the activity of our body that uses this fuel to restore and maintain function.

We think of sleep as a "time to do nothing," but the truth is that our bodies are very dynamic. It restores the function of the body and muscles that have been consumed and damaged during non-sleep time, stores important information received, and organizes unnecessary emotions and information to keep the function of the body's organs stable and restore the function of nerve cells to learn new information [1].

Therefore, when we wake up after a good night's sleep, we are not only physically but also emotionally refreshed and refreshed, and getting enough sleep prevents various mental and physical illnesses [2]. However, stress, hormonal changes, and lifestyle habits can also easily reduce sleep quality.

If you still feel tired when you wake up, or if you have difficulty falling asleep or getting a good night's sleep without waking up in the middle of the night, you need to take appropriate measures not only for your sleep health but also for your overall physical health.

1. Sleep duration · Improves sleep efficiency

Insomnia is the most common sleep disorder and refers to taking too long to fall asleep, waking up frequently after falling asleep, waking up without getting enough sleep and not being able to fall asleep again, or waking up feeling refreshed. The prevalence of insomnia in South Korea is said to be about 22.8%, which means that about 1 in 5 people suffer from the problem of not getting a good night's sleep.

In 2019, Nutrients published a clinical trial study that evaluated the effects of lactium intake on sleep in 48 Koreans with mild to moderate sleep disorders. It is reported that qualitative improvements have been confirmed [3].

"Not only did the lactium (ACH) group see an increase in total sleep time and sleep efficiency, but there was also an improvement in time to fall asleep and time to wake up. Interestingly, the Sleep-Wake Activity Test showed a sustained increase in sleep efficiency for 4 weeks after lactium intake."

2. Anxiety · Stress · Improves depression

As mentioned at the beginning, there are many causes of poor sleep quality, ranging from lifestyle habits to stress and hormonal changes, but the most common cause is a change in the rhythm of life. When the rhythm of life changes, such as travel, job change, moving, or hospitalization, the quality of sleep temporarily decreases, and this phenomenon usually improves after a few days. Chronic physical illnesses can also accompany insomnia.

However, if your sleep quality suffers chronically for no apparent reason, it may be due to chronic stress or psychological problems such as depression or anxiety. Of course, sleep problems can also cause stress or anxiety.
For this reason, many sleep-related clinical trials measure the level of stress, depression, and anxiety together. A study by Phing, C. H. et al., et al. (2019), which evaluated the effects of lactium and theanine intake in 70 patients with sleep disorders, also measured stress, depression, and anxiety levels along with sleep quality, and found that improvements in anxiety, stress, and depression were observed along with sleep [4].

"From the third week of intake, a large difference was observed between the lactium and placebo groups in the anxiety and stress scores, and the anxiety and stress scores were significantly lower in the lactium group compared to the placebo group. At week 4, a significant difference was also observed in the depression assessment score in the lactium group."

3. Improvement of stress-related physical symptoms

In fact, stress-induced insomnia is a type of stress-related anxiety symptom. In addition to sleeplessness, stress-related anxiety symptoms can also manifest as nervousness, nervousness, and panic. In addition to anxiety, stress-related symptoms can also manifest as physical symptoms such as lethargy, indigestion, headache, and dizziness.
Lactium, a functional ingredient for sleep health, is an ingredient that has a lot of academic research related to anxiety relief as much as sleep. One of the most notable studies was a clinical trial that evaluated the effects of lactium intake on 63 women with stress-related disorders such as anxiety disorders and sleep disorders. This study reported improvements in symptoms of gastrointestinal system, cardiovascular system, cognition, emotion, and social problems following the consumption of lactium [5].

"Women with stress-related symptoms who took lactium (αs1-casein) for 30 days improved their stress symptoms, including stress-related digestive problems, cardiovascular problems, cognitive problems, emotional problems, and social problems."

Today, we took a look at lactium (milk protein hydrolysate), a functional ingredient for sleep health approved by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety. As it is an ingredient that helps to alleviate various stress-related symptoms as well as improving sleep quality and efficiency, it is considered to be an ingredient that can be used by menopausal women and examinees, as well as those who usually feel stress-related physical symptoms.

In addition, most clinical trials have shown a significant effect when lactium is taken daily before bedtime, for at least 2 to 4 weeks. Therefore, it is recommended to continue to consume it for at least 4 weeks.

I hope you have a healthy day in body and mind. It was Jinny.
