Hello. I'm a pharmacist Jinny.
Nowadays, more and more people are looking for lactic acid bacteria for basic health care. However, did you know that lactic acid bacteria have various species of bacteria and their functions vary depending on the combination of bacteria, so there are not many bacterial species that have been verified by the scientific community?
Today, we will take a look at the representative strains and functions of two representative strains that have been validated through continuous research in the scientific community: Lactobacillus acidophilus and bifidobacterium lactis.
1.Antiviral
Methods of suppressing human infections by viruses are constantly being studied. In particular, research is being conducted on substances that can protect mucous membrane cell walls that are vulnerable to infection, and surface layer proteins are attracting attention as a type of protective substance.
Based on the fact that this superficial layer protein is commonly found in bacteria of the genus Lactobacillus, a paper studying the antiviral mechanism of Lactobacillus acidophilus was published in Front Microbiol in 2019 [1].
"S-layer proteins present in the cell membrane of Lactobacillus acidophilus can inhibit viral and bacterial infections by blocking pathogen interaction with dendritic cell-specific cell-specific cell-to-cell adhesion molecules."
2. Improves Functional Bowel Disease Symptoms
It is a leading hypothesis in the scientific community that the intestinal flora influences the development of functional bowel disease. As a result, research has been actively conducted since the 2010s to find strains and combinations of bacteria that can contribute to the improvement of intestinal diseases by changing the composition of intestinal flora.
The paper I am about to introduce is a paper published in J Clin Gastroentero in 2011 that reports the results of a clinical trial evaluating the effect of the combination of NCFM, the representative strain of Lactobacillus acidophilus, and Bi-07, the representative strain of Bifidobacterium lactis, on the improvement of functional bowel disease [2].
"The fact that a significant reduction in the severity of abdominal bloating symptoms was consistently observed in the experimental group when compared to the control group at both four and eight weeks after the intervention, suggests a significant impact of probiotic supplementation on improving abdominal bloating"
3. Strengthens immune function
Many of you now know that lactic acid bacteria can contribute to strengthening immune function. As reports on the strengthening of immune function of lactic acid bacteria continue to accumulate in academia, research continues to identify the types of bacteria that contribute to strengthening immune function and their mechanisms.
A paper published in 2013 in J Nutr Sci revealed the immune function enhancement mechanism of Bi-07, a representative strain of Bifidobacterium lactis, and suggested implications for the management of health in the elderly [3].
"Supplementation with Bi-07 live bacteria may provide long-term health benefits in older adults by enhancing innate immune defenses against infection but not causing inflammation-related metabolic disorders."
This is a brief overview of the major strains and their functions that have been validated by the scientific community.
I hope you have a healthy day in body and mind. It was Jinny.
