Are you sure biotin is good for your hair?
Hello. I'm a pharmacist Jinny.
As we've already explained, biotin aids in the synthesis of keratin, the protein that makes up hair, and contributes to hair growth and strengthening hair tissue. However, long-term use of medications such as antibiotics and acne medications can lead to biotin deficiency, which can lead to thinning hair and hair loss.
Biotin is a coenzyme of acetyl-CoA carboxylase involved in the synthesis of fatty acids. Therefore, if biotin is deficient, the skin lacks the necessary fat, which can lead to skin rashes and dermatitis.
A 2018 study in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology showed the effects of biotin supplementation in pediatric patients with atopic dermatitis with biotin deficiency [2].Biotin helps with hair and skin health, as well as regulating blood sugar levels. Biotin enhances the activity of pyruvate carboxylase, which is involved in the glycogenesis process. The glucose produced then travels through the bloodstream to tissues that are involved in blood sugar regulation or use glucose as their primary source of energy. Biotin also promotes glucose utilization for entry into the triaccarboxylic acid cycle, an important metabolic cycle for energy production. Therefore, biotin intake may improve abnormal glucose metabolism.
As early as 1993, a paper was published in the Journal of Clinical Biochemistry and Nutrition showing that subjects with diabetes who took biotin reduced their fasting blood sugar [3].
Fasting blood sugar levels dropped to normal within two months and remained within the normal range thereafter.
Today we looked at the benefits of taking biotin. As explained in this article, biotin contributes to hair growth and strengthening of hair tissue, and it also plays an important role in maintaining skin health by being involved in the synthesis of fatty acids in the skin. In addition, it has been shown to contribute to the normalization of glucose metabolism.
Biotin can generally be obtained from the foods we eat in our daily lives, but the level of biotin in the body can decrease due to the use of medications, excessive diet, and certain medical conditions. In this case, you may want to consider taking biotin for hair and skin health.
Many biotin supplements contain more biotin than the 30μg daily intake set by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, so some people may be worried about taking too much biotin. Biotin is a water-soluble vitamin, so even if you take an overdose, it does not accumulate in the body, and the remaining amount is excreted through the urine, so it does not cause serious side effects. However, long-term intake of more than 10,000 μg of biotin per day can cause adverse events such as acne, high blood sugar, and gray hair, so it is best to avoid overdose.
I hope you have a healthy day in body and mind. It was Jinny.
