Hello. I'm a pharmacist Jinny.
Do you know about 'diet coffee'? If you're interested in dieting, you've probably heard of it at least once. Diet coffee is different from the regular coffee we usually drink.
Regular coffee is a beverage that is brewed by roasting coffee beans. Diet coffee uses green coffee beans as they are, not roasted. Because of their green color, they are also called Green Coffee Bean.
The diet effect of green coffee beans is due to a substance called chlorogenic acid. Chlorogenic acid is a type of polyphenol that is said to have anti-obesity effects, antioxidants, anti-inflammatory, and liver protection by regulating lipid and glucose metabolism. However, chlorogenic acid is vulnerable to heat and is destroyed during the roasting process of coffee beans, so it is difficult to expect the diet effect from ordinary coffee.
Now, let's take a closer look at the diet coffee, the green coffee bean, through research.
What does the chlorogenic acid contained in green coffee beans do in our body and why does it have a diet effect? Chlorogenic acid regulates the metabolism of glucose by reducing glucose absorption in the small intestine and inhibiting the activity of glucose-producing enzymes. In this situation, the body burns stored fat instead of glucose, which has the effect of weight loss.
In this regard, let's take a look at the human application test conducted in 2006. In this study, adults with a body mass index (BMI) greater than 25 were given 200 mg of green coffee bean extract capsules twice daily for 60 days.
Body weight and body mass index decreased, and muscle mass increased relative to fat mass [1].
If you're determined to lose weight, it's important to take care of your diet more than anything else. It's important to eat healthy foods, and in some cases, you may need to cut back on the amount of food you eat. Therefore, if you have difficulty controlling your appetite, your diet is bound to be difficult.
There are human body test results that show that green coffee beans also help reduce appetite, so I would like to introduce them. In this study, patients with metabolic syndrome* were given 2 capsules of 400 mg of green coffee bean extract per day for 8 weeks.
*Metabolic syndrome: An individual has three or more of the following: heart disease, diabetes, stroke, high blood pressure, hyperglycemia, hypertriglyceridemia, low HDL cholesterol, and central obesity.
In addition to a decrease in appetite scores, there was also a decrease in blood pressure and blood sugar, which are important indicators for patients with metabolic syndrome [2].
"Compared to placebo, significant reductions in SBP (systolic blood pressure), FBS (fasting blood glucose), HOMA-IR (insulin resistance), waist circumference and appetite scores were observed after green coffee bean extract administration."
In addition, green coffee beans, like glucose, can improve lipid metabolism in favor of dieting. This is because it activates the breakdown of fats and inhibits the absorption of lipids.
Therefore, human application trials have been conducted to study the effects of green coffee bean intake in patients with dyslipidemia or fatty liver that need to improve blood lipid levels [3].
In 2017, we would like to introduce the results of a clinical trial conducted on patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver. In this study, 500 mg capsules of green coffee bean extract were taken twice daily for 8 weeks. The results showed significant reductions in ALT (liver levels), TG (triglycerides), total cholesterol, FFA (free fatty acids), hs-CRP (inflammation levels), TAC (total antioxidant capacity), FBS (fasting blood glucose), and HOMA-IR (insulin resistance) [4].
The researchers summarized it as follows:
Today, we looked at the benefits of green coffee beans, which are diet coffee. Since coffee beans are the raw material, trace amounts of caffeine can cause symptoms such as nervousness and sleeplessness. Therefore, if you are sensitive to caffeine, you should be careful about consuming it.
In addition, in the human application test using green coffee beans, the test period is usually set to more than 8 weeks. If you are trying to lose weight with green coffee beans, it is recommended that you continue to consume them for at least 8 weeks. Of course, if you combine diet management with exercise, it will be a healthy and effective diet.
