3. Anti-inflammatory

Hello, I am Jinny, a pharmacist.

Anti-aging is truly a magical word that moves the heart. Many people, including myself, are looking for an efficient way to delay skin aging. The mechanism of action and human application test results of 'rosemary extract complex (SunMax)', a new skin health material recently recognized by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety as an individually recognized functional ingredient for skin health are quite surprising, so I would like to introduce them to you today.

Theoretically speaking, effective anti-aging requires two treatments. One is to replenish the three major elements of the dermis that decrease as the body ages, and the other is to prevent extrinsic aging (photoaging) caused by ultraviolet rays as much as possible. Therefore, it is recommended to replenish collagen and elastin, which decrease with aging, and this is why dermatologists emphasize the importance of sunscreen.

So far, I have introduced ingredients that are beneficial in managing intrinsic aging, such as collagen, elastin, and salmon DNA, and ingredients that are beneficial in managing extrinsic aging, such as glutathione. However, the ingredients that are beneficial in managing extrinsic aging are mainly based on their antioxidant properties, so we had to expect relatively indirect benefits. However, the functional raw material rosemary extract and other complex (SunMax) that we will introduce today is not only recognized for its functionality in maintaining skin health against photoaging, but is also an ingredient that has been confirmed to improve the formation of four types of wrinkles in human application tests.

Let us now take a closer look at the efficacy of this new direct anti-aging material.

1. Improves Wrinkles Between Eyebrows ∙ Nasolabial Folds ∙ Mouth Area ∙ Marionette

A typical symptom of skin aging is wrinkles. Both intrinsic and extrinsic aging leave wrinkles, but while intrinsic aging is characterized by fine wrinkles, extrinsic aging caused by ultraviolet rays is characterized by deep and coarse wrinkles. Therefore, as an anti-aging ingredient that manages extrinsic aging caused by ultraviolet rays, its ability to improve wrinkle formation is very important.

As a result of a human application test targeting adult men and women with wrinkles around the eyes or mild or moderate nasolabial folds, it was confirmed that intake of a rosemary extract complex (SunMax) improved wrinkle formation in four areas of the face.

"As a result of ingesting rosemary extract and other complexes (225 mg/day) for 13 weeks, wrinkle formation (glabellar lines, nasolabial folds, marionette lines, wrinkles around the mouth), dermatologist's visual evaluation (erythema, itching), and subject's subjective skin evaluation (face) Wrinkles) significantly decreased compared to the control group."

2. Prevents Photoaging

As mentioned earlier, the main cause of extrinsic aging is ultraviolet rays. The word ‘photoaging’, which refers to skin aging caused by ultraviolet rays, is used interchangeably with ‘extrinsic aging’ to have almost the same meaning. When exposed to ultraviolet rays, free radicals increase and enzymes that decompose collagen and elastin are released. As a result, skin elasticity decreases and skin wrinkles occur.

Likewise, how the rosemary extract and other complex (SunMax) protects the skin from skin damage caused by photoaging has also become a major topic of review. In 2002, research results have been reported in academia showing that carnosic acid, one of the key ingredients of the rosemary extract and other complex (SunMax), inhibits the expression of collagen degrading enzyme (MMP-1) in human fibroblasts caused by ultraviolet rays.

“Carnosic acid, a polyphenolic antioxidant, showed inhibition of collagen degrading enzyme (MMP-1) expression induced by UVA.”

3. Anti-inflammatory

Ultraviolet rays not only cause skin aging by decomposing collagen and elastin, but also increase free radicals to produce various pro-inflammatory cytokines, and the inflammatory cytokines produced in this way also promote cell necrosis and cell natural death. As a result, not only skin elasticity but also the overall skin condition deteriorates.

The reason why the rosemary extract complex (SunMax), which suppresses the expression of collagen-decomposing enzymes caused by ultraviolet rays, is special is that it can also be expected to have an anti-inflammatory effect. According to research results in 2012, the anti-inflammatory benefits of the composition of carnosic acid and lutein, which are key components of rosemary extract complex, were confirmed.

“The composition of lutein and carnosic acid showed a high level of synergistic inhibition (80%) on the activity of NF-κB. These results indicate a significant synergistic effect of the two components.”

Today, we learned about rosemary extract complex (SunMax), an ingredient that can be called the strongest exogenous anti-aging agent, from improving wrinkle formation to preventing photoaging. I think many people are taking collagen and elastin for anti-aging. If you pay as much attention to preventing destruction by ultraviolet rays as you do to taking care of the components of the dermis that decrease due to aging, you can prevent skin aging more effectively.

I hope you have a healthy day both physically and mentally. This was Jinny.
