Effects of MSM
1. Strengthens immune function
2. Anti-inflammatory
3. Antioxidant

Hello, I am Jinny, a pharmacist.

Recently, as interest in strengthening immune function has increased, many people may be paying attention to vitamin C. Dr. Carl Pfeiffer, a world-renowned nutritionist, once said, “If the 20th century was the era of vitamins, the 21st century is the era of dietary sulfur (MSM).”

Dietary sulfur literally refers to sulfur that can be eaten. MSM (Methyl-sulfonyl-methane), which is well known as an ingredient that is good for joints, is dietary sulfur. This ingredient is the most abundant mineral found in the human body after calcium and phosphorus, and performs various functions related to the immune system in addition to joint health.

1. Strengthens immune function

I think ingredients that strengthen immune function are of utmost interest to many people these days. The strengthening effect of MSM on the immune system has been proven through ongoing research, and studies are now being conducted on the mechanism of MSM strengthening the immune system.

In 2017, the results of a meta-study that comprehensively reviewed existing papers on MSM was published in . This study introduces the enhancement of immune function as the main mechanism of MSM.

“Sulfur-containing compounds, including MSM, play an important role in supporting the immune response. MSM modulates the immune response by intervening between oxidative stress and inflammation.”

2. Anti-inflammatory

The biochemist Robert Herschler, who holds a patent for the pharmaceutical use of MSM, reported that MSM is effective in improving allergic reactions caused by the intake of aspirin and other drugs. He also claimed that it is useful in preventing gastrointestinal disorders associated with the consumption of drugs such as aspirin.

In 2017, a paper supporting Robert Herschler's claims was published in Eur J Pharmacol. This paper elucidates the protective mechanisms of MSM against mucosal damage in the stomach.

"This data suggests that MSM may reduce the severity of ethanol/HCl-induced gastric mucosal damage through the inhibition of oxidative stress and inflammation."

3. Antioxidant

As revealed in the study introduced earlier, MSM's anti-inflammatory mechanism is related to the inhibition of oxidative stress. Accordingly, MSM's oxidative stress inhibition and antioxidant effects continue to receive attention from researchers, and related research reports are accumulating.

In 2013, a paper was published in The Iranian Journal of Pharmaceutical Research evaluating the effects of MSM on improving oxidative stress.

“Oral supplementation with MSM lowers exercise-induced oxidative stress in untrained healthy young adults.”

We briefly looked at the main functions of MSM that have been verified in academia

I hope you have a healthy day both physically and mentally. This was Jinny.
