Hello, I am Jinny, a pharmacist.

What is the most important factor in maintaining health? I prioritize two things: nutrition and sleep. If nutrition provides components and fuel for our body to function smoothly, sleep is our body's activity of recovering and maintaining function using this fuel.

We think of sleep as ‘time to do nothing,’ but in fact, our bodies change very dynamically. It restores the functions of the body and muscles that are exhausted and damaged during non-sleep time, stores important information received, and organizes unnecessary emotions and information to maintain stable function of body organs and to learn new information. [1].

Therefore, when we wake up after a good night's sleep, we feel refreshed, not only physically but also emotionally. Sufficient sleep prevents various mental and physical diseases [2]. However, sleep quality can easily deteriorate depending on stress, hormonal changes, or lifestyle habits.

If you still feel tired when you wake up or have difficulty falling asleep or getting a good night's sleep without waking up in the middle of the night, you need to take appropriate measures not only for your sleep health but also for your overall physical health. Today, we would like to introduce you to Lactium (milk protein hydrolyzate), a functional ingredient for sleep health.

1. Improves Sleep Time and Sleep Efficiency

Insomnia is the most common sleep disorder and refers to a condition where it takes too long to fall asleep, waking up frequently after falling asleep, waking up without enough sleep and not being able to fall back to sleep, or not feeling refreshed even after waking up. The prevalence of insomnia in Korea is known to be about 22.8%, which means that about 1 in 5 people have problems getting a good night's sleep.

In 2019, a human study was published in Nutrients that evaluated the the effect of lactium intake on sleep in 48 Koreans suffering from mild to moderate sleep disorders. This study found that quantitative and qualitative improvements have been confirmed from lactium intake.

"Not only did the total sleep time and sleep efficiency increase in the lactium (ACH) intake group, but the time to fall asleep and the time to wake up also improved. Interestingly, the sleep-wake activity test showed that the lactium intake showed an increase in sleep for 4 weeks. It was confirmed that efficiency continued to increase.”

2. Improves Anxiety, Stress and Depression

As mentioned at the beginning, the causes of poor sleep quality range from lifestyle habits to stress and hormonal changes, with the most common cause being a change in lifestyle. When the rhythm of life changes due to travel, job change, moving, or hospitalization, sleep quality temporarily deteriorates, and this phenomenon usually improves after a few days. Chronic physical illnesses can also accompany insomnia.

However, if sleep quality chronically deteriorates for no particular reason, it may be due to psychological problems such as chronic stress, depression, or anxiety. Of course, sleep problems can also cause stress or anxiety.

Therefore, many sleep-related human tests measure stress, depression, and anxiety levels together. A study by Phing, C. H, and researchers (2019), which evaluated the effects of lactium and theanine intake on 70 people with sleep disorder symptoms, also measured sleep quality as well as levels of stress, depression, and anxiety. This study reports that improvements in anxiety, stress, and depression were observed along with sleep.

"From the 3rd week of intake, a significant difference was observed between the lactium intake group and the placebo intake group in anxiety and stress evaluation scores. Compared to the placebo intake group, the anxiety and stress evaluation scores were significantly lower in the lactium intake group. In the 4th week, Significant differences were also observed in the depression evaluation scores of the lactium intake group.”

3. Improves Stress-related Physical Symptoms

In fact, insomnia caused by stress is a type of stress-related anxiety symptom. In addition to insomnia, stress-related anxiety symptoms can appear as nervousness, tension, and panic. In addition to anxiety symptoms, stress symptoms also manifest as physical symptoms such as lethargy, indigestion, headaches, and dizziness.

Lactium, a sleep health functional raw material introduced today, is an ingredient that has a lot of academic research related to anxiety relief as well as sleep. A representative study is a human trial that evaluated the effects of lactium intake on 63 women with stress-related disorders such as anxiety disorders and sleep disorders. This study reports that consumption of lactium improved symptoms of stress, including digestive, cardiovascular, cognitive, emotional, and social problems.

“When women with stress-related symptoms were given lactium (αs1-casein) for 30 days, stress symptoms including digestive problems, cardiovascular problems, cognitive problems, emotional problems and social problems were improved.”

Today, we looked at Lactium (milk protein hydrolyzate), a sleep health functional ingredient recognized by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety. As it is an ingredient that helps relieve various stress-related symptoms, including improving the quality and efficiency of sleep I think it is an ingredient that can be used beneficially by menopausal women, test takers, as well as those who feel physical symptoms of stress.

In addition, most human trials confirm that significant effects were measured when lactium was ingested every day before going to bed for at least 2 to 4 weeks. Therefore, it is recommended that you consume it consistently for at least 4 weeks.

I hope you have a healthy day both physically and mentally. This was Jinny.
