Vitamin A is said to cause birth defects and omega-3s make diabetes worse. It's just that nutritional supplements can cause side effects. However, I would like to ask if you have actually seen anyone suffer from these side effects. Theoretically, it is possible, but only because it appears very rarely.
According to the U.S. Center for Toxicity Control, 53 billion nutritional supplements are taken every year in the U.S. alone, but there were only 7 cases of mineral preparations, 6 cases of plant extracts, 1 case of multinutrient supplements, and no cases of vitamin supplements in the 10 years from 1994~2004. Why? The reason is simple. This is because, in essence, nutritional supplements are foods, not drugs. Omega-3s are basically the same as eating the oil of blue fish. Calcium supplementation is equivalent to eating the calcium in milk, multivitamins are the same as eating minerals and vitamins in vegetables and fruits, and probiotics are eating the beneficial bacteria in kimchi, yogurt, or miso.
Most multivitamins contain around 2,000~3,000IU of vitamin A. However, to cause birth defects, you need to take at least 10,000 IU for several months. If nutritional supplements really had a lot of side effects, authoritative organizations such as the World Health Organization and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration would have taken measures such as banning their sale first. But to date, no trusted medical institution that I know of has recommended that people "not take nutritional supplements."The Cochrane Report, an international research group that is considered one of the most challenging in verifying the efficacy of medicines, also mentions a lack of evidence that some supplements are effective, but there is no suggestion that nutritional supplements should not be taken.
Once again, if you stick to the dosage and dosage, there is no reason to worry about the side effects of nutritional supplements. This is because nutritional supplements are food, not medicine, and it is perfectly reasonable and appropriate to make up for what is lacking.
