Hello. I'm a pharmacist Jinny.

How is your joint health? Have you ever struggled with pain in your wrist, shoulder, or knee joint? Today, for those who are concerned about joint health, we would like to introduce you to the famous joint health ingredient 'Green Lipped Mussel'.

The green-lipped mussel, which grows in New Zealand's coastal waters, has a greenish shell, unlike common mussels. It began to gain widespread attention as it became known as the secret to joint health for the indigenous Maori people of New Zealand's coast. The Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety has recognized the functionality of 'Liprinol-Green Lipped Mussel Extract', an oil ingredient extracted from green-lipped mussels, as 'it may help with joint health'. Let's take a look at how green-lipped mussels can help support joint health in a study reported in the scientific community.

1. Reduces joint pain

Green-lipped mussels reduce the production of iNOS and COX-2, enzymes that induce inflammatory responses, and also reduce cartilage damage by inhibiting the expression of MMP-2 and MMP-9, enzymes that break down cartilage. Therefore, consuming green-lipped mussels can help protect joints and cartilage by reducing the inflammatory response and cartilage breakdown.

In this regard, a 2004 study in Progress in Nutrition reported that supplementation with green-lipped mussel extract reduced joint pain in subjects suffering from osteoarthritis [1].

"Compared to the control group at weeks 8, 12 and 24, there was a significant reduction in visual analogue scale (VAS, a method of assessing subjective pain intensity) pain scores after adjusting for the amount of acetaminophen (an antipyretic analgesic) used in patients treated with liprinol (green-lipped mussel extract)."

2. Improves joint function

There are two main types of arthritis: osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. First of all, osteoarthritis is a disease in which the cartilage that protects the joints is damaged or degenerative changes cause damage to the bones and ligaments that make up the joints, resulting in inflammation. Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease in which the synovial membrane that surrounds the joints becomes inflamed, causing the joints to be destroyed or deformed. Although the causes of the disease are different, both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis cause joint pain and significantly reduce joint function.

In this regard, a 1998 study was published in Complementary Therapies in Medicine showing that green-lipped mussels improved joint function in patients with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis [2]

"Both stable lyophilized mussel powder and mussel-derived lipid extract are effective in reducing pain, swelling, and stiffness, and improving the functional index of rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis."

3. Improvement of crude stiffness

Morning stiffness refers to a phenomenon in which when you wake up in the morning or when you stay in one position for a long time, your joints become stiff and difficult to move, but after moving your body to some extent, it becomes okay. In osteoarthritis, this symptom lasts less than 30 minutes, while in rheumatoid arthritis it lasts more than 1 hour.

This is the result of the high release of IL-6, a cytokine that causes inflammation, during sleep, which increases the concentration of IL-6 in the body. Green-lipped mussels are known to suppress the secretion of this IL-6. In the previous study, both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis patients reported an improvement in morning stiffness when green-lipped mussels were consumed [3].

"The improvement in early stiffness over three months was significant in all groups."

Today, we've looked at the various benefits of eating green-lipped mussels. Green-lipped mussels support joint health, but since they are extracted from mussels, you should be careful if you are allergic to shellfish. In addition, if you have liver disease or are taking thrombolytic drugs, it is recommended that you consult a specialist before consuming green-lipped mussels.

I hope you have a healthy day in body and mind. It was Jinny.
