[Effects of Probiotics] 3 Reasons Why You Should Choose a Strain that Has Been Sufficiently Verified by Academia

Effects of Probiotics
1. Antiviral
2. Improves functional bowel disease symptoms
3. Strengthens immune function

Hello, I am Jinny, a pharmacist.

These days, more and more people are looking for probiotics for basic health care. However, did you know that there are many different types of lactic acid bacteria and that their functions vary depending on the combination of the bacterial species, so not many strains of lactic acid bacteria have been verified in academia?

Today, we will look at the representative strains and functions of Lactobacillus acidophilus and bifidobacterium lactis, two representative bacterial species that have been verified through continuous research in academia.

1. Antiviral

Methods for suppressing human infection by viruses are continuously being researched. In particular, research is continuing on substances that can protect mucosal cell walls that are vulnerable to infection, and surface layer proteins are attracting attention as a type of protective substance.

Focusing on the fact that this surface layer protein is commonly found in bacteria of the Lactobacillus genus, a paper studying the antiviral mechanism of Lactobacillus acidophilus was published in Front Microbiol in 2019.

“The surface layer (S-layer) protein present in the cell envelope of Lactobacillus acidophilus can inhibit viral and bacterial infections by blocking the interaction between dendritic cell-specific intercellular adhesion molecules and pathogens.”

2. Improvement of Functional Bowel Disease Symptoms

It is a leading hypothesis in academic that intestinal flora influences the development of functional intestinal diseases. Accordingly, research to find combinations of fungal species and strains that can contribute to improving intestinal diseases by changing the composition of the intestinal flora has been actively conducted since the 2010s.

The paper I will introduce now is a paper published in J Clin Gastroentero in 2011, which shows that the combination of NCFM, a representative strain of Lactobacillus acidophilus, and Bi-07, a representative strain of Bifidobacterium lactis, improves functional intestinal diseases. We are reporting the results of clinical trials evaluating the impact on

“Supplementation with Bi-07 probiotics may provide long-term health benefits to older adults by strengthening innate immune defenses against infection but without causing inflammation-related metabolic disorders.”

3. Strengthens immune function

The fact that probiotics can contribute to strengthening the immune system is now well-known by many. In academia, research on the specific strains of probiotics and their mechanisms contributing to immune function enhancement continues, with reports accumulating consistently.

In a paper published in J Nutr Sci in 2013, the research delves into the immune-enhancing mechanisms of the representative strain Bi-07 of Bifidobacterium lactis, suggesting implications for elderly health management.

"Supplementation with live Bi-07 enhances innate immune defense against infections in the elderly without causing inflammation-related metabolic disorders, offering long-term health benefits."

Today, we briefly looked at the functions of major bacterial species and strains that have been verified in academia.

I hope you have a healthy day both physically and mentally. This was Jinny.
