Hello, I am Jinny, a pharmacist.

Today, we're going to talk about middle-aged dieting, especially focusing on belly fat. Many of our middle-aged customers who visit our pharmacy often say, "As I age, my belly keeps getting bigger."

That's correct. After middle age, our bodies tend to gain weight more easily. This is due to a decrease in the secretion of various hormones that promote metabolism. Ideally, we would want the weight gain to be evenly distributed, but unfortunately, that's not the case.

Instead, we tend to accumulate fat primarily in the central part of our bodies, leading to abdominal obesity. This results in a protruding belly, while at the same time, we may lose muscle in our arms and legs, giving rise to a slim and less toned physique, often referred to as the "spider body shape."

So, for those of you who are concerned about middle-aged dieting and belly fat, it would be beneficial to pay attention to the ingredient we're introducing today. It's a substance called "fermented castanea crenata shell extract." This is a dieting material that has been shown to reduce abdominal fat when consumed. Now, let's delve into the research together.

1. Reduces Abdominal Fat

As many of you may already know, the reason to be cautious about abdominal fat is because it poses risks to your health. Especially visceral fat, which accumulates around the internal organs in the abdominal area, increases the risk of various health issues, from diabetes, high cholesterol, liver diseases, to cardiovascular diseases and even different types of cancers. That's why it's crucial to consistently measure your waist circumference alongside your body weight.

In regards to this, I would like to introduce the results of a human application test conducted at Chung-Ang University Hospital using fermented castanea crenata shell extract powder. In this test, individuals aged 20 to 65 who were either overweight or obese were instructed to consume 1,000mg of fermented castanea crenata shell extract powder daily for 12 weeks. The results showed a decrease in abdominal fat, specifically the “area” covered by abdominal fat.

"The analysis of the change in the total abdominal fat area through CT, using the PP set, showed a statistically significant difference between the intake group and the (middle) control group after 12 weeks of intake."

2. Reduces Body Fat

In the same study, the intake of fermented chestnut shell extract powder was analyzed for its effects not only on abdominal fat but also on total body fat accumulation. It was found that there was a significant reduction in body fat as well.

"The analysis of the change in body fat mass measured by DEXA using the PP set showed a statistically significant difference between the intake group and the control group after 12 weeks of consumption."

3. Antioxidant

The key component of Castanea Crenata Shell Extract Powder is a substance called 'ellagic acid.' This is a type of phytochemical found in nuts such as walnuts and almonds, which belong to the same category as chestnuts.
*Phytochemicals: This is a compound word composed of 'phyto,' which means plant, and 'chemical,' which means chemistry. It refers to plant-based chemical substances with physiological activity that contribute to health.

Similar to other phytochemicals, the academic community has been actively researching the physiological effects of ellagic acid. In 2018, a review paper was published in Planta Medica, which reviewed previous studies on the effects of ellagic acid. It reported the antioxidant effects of ellagic acid as follows:

In summary, ellagic acid demonstrates its antioxidant properties through the removal of reactive oxygen species, which can be explained as a protective effect against damage caused by reactive oxygen species.

Today, we have explored the research on the effects of fermented chestnut shell extract powder, a novel dietary material, particularly in addressing the challenge of abdominal obesity during middle age.

In my opinion, the most crucial aspect of middle-age dieting is "consistently staying active." In professional terms, this is known as Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis (NEAT), which refers to the calories burned by staying consistently active in your daily life. It includes activities like choosing stairs over escalators when using public transportation, standing and applying some effort instead of sitting in your seat, and walking the last few stops to your destination instead of taking a bus.

As winter is approaching, it's a great opportunity to manage that extra belly fat gained during this season by focusing on maintaining a balanced diet and staying active for your health.

I hope you have a healthy day both physically and mentally. This was Jinny.
