Collagen Synergy Ingredients
1. Vitamin C, which promotes collagen synthesis
2. Vitamin E, which reduces collagen breakdown
3. Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, a combination that amplifies collagen synthesis

Hello, I am Jinny, a pharmacist.

Recently, more and more people are consuming collagen for skin health. However, even if collagen is supplemented in sufficient amounts, not all of it is used as connective tissue in the body, and it may be decomposed due to various environmental factors

Therefore, to receive more direct help with skin health through collagen intake, it is important to supplement with nutrients that help collagen synthesis. Today, to consume collagen more wisely, I would like to introduce three vitamins that are responsible for synergy with collagen.

1. Vitamin C, Which Promotes Collagen Synthesis

I don't think there aren’t many people who don't know about the efficacy/effects of vitamin C. It is included in almost all multivitamins on the market, and is a nutrient widely used as a drink when you need to stay up all night and as a fluid when you feel achy. But did you know that vitamin C also plays an important role in collagen synthesis? For this reason, a lack of vitamin C can cause scurvy, which weakens tissues such as gums and muscles.

In 1998, Int J Cosmet Sci reported a paper studying the effects of vitamin C on collagen synthesis in the normal human body.

“Thus, vitamin C promotes the synthesis of a normal mature collagen network by maintaining optimal lysyl and prolyl hydroxylase activities.”

Reference :  Boyera N, Galey I, Bernard BA (1998). Effect of vitamin C and its derivatives on collagen synthesis and cross-linking by normal human fibroblasts. Int J Cosmet Sci, 20(3):151-8.
2. Vitamin E, Which Reduces Collagen Breakdown

Compared to vitamin C, relatively less is known about the efficacy/effects of vitamin E. However, vitamin E is a very important antioxidant nutrient as it destroys free radicals, which are waste products of oxygen and nutrients in our body.

The antioxidant effect of vitamin E also has a significant impact on collagen, which makes up tissues. A paper published in J Clin Periodontol in 1994 found that vitamin E acts as an antioxidant and reduces collagen breakdown.

“As a result, the antioxidants vitamin E and selenium reduced collagen breakdown in the experimental granulation tissue.”

Reference :   Asman B, Wijkander P, Hjerpe A (1994). Reduction of collagen degradation in experimental granulation tissue by vitamin E and selenium. J Clin Periodontol, 21(1):45-7.
3. Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, a Combination That Amplifies Collagen Synthesis

Additionally, in 2004, a research paper was published in Biomed Pharmacother comparing collagen synthesis results when vitamins A, C, and E were treated individually or together.

“As expected, ascorbate (vitamin C) stimulated collagen accumulation. (omitted) The effect was further amplified when three vitamins (vitamin A, vitamin C, and vitamin E) were present.”

Reference :  Robert L, Fodil-Bourahla I, Bizbiz L, Robert AM (2004). Effects of L-fucose and fucose-rich oligo- and polysaccharides (FROP-s) on collagen biosynthesis by human skin fibroblasts. Modulation of the effect of retinol, ascorbate and alpha-tocopherol. Biomed Pharmacother, 58(1):65-70.

Today, we looked at three useful vitamins that help collagen. However, no matter how diligently you supplement these nutrients, the rate of collagen synthesis decreases when exposed to ultraviolet rays, so for the sake of skin health, you should always pay attention to UV protection.

I hope you have a healthy day both physically and mentally. This was Jinny.
