To increase calcium absorption, add 'this'

1. Increased
calcium absorption rate2. Increased
urinary calcium3. Improves sleep duration and sleep quality

Hello. I'm a pharmacist Jinny.

Since you were a child, you've probably heard a lot about the need to eat calcium to make your bones stronger. However, calcium is poorly absorbed compared to other nutrients, so it is very important to increase the absorption rate. Polygammaglutamic acid, which we introduce today, is a unique ingredient that helps the absorption of calcium.

Polygammaglutamic acid is a mucus component found in fermented soybean foods such as cheonggukjang and natto, and has been recognized by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety for its ability to help promote calcium absorption in the body. Let's take a closer look at the research.

1. Increased calcium absorption

Most calcium is absorbed in the small intestine. Polygammaglutamic acid increases calcium solubility in the small intestine, which can improve lateral cell transport, where substances move through the spaces between cells. That's why polygammaglutamic acid helps increase calcium absorption.

A 2007 study in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition reported that polygammaglutamic acid increased calcium absorption in postmenopausal women [1].

"A single dose of polygammaglutamic acid (PGA) was shown to significantly increase intestinal calcium absorption in postmenopausal women, especially those with below-average calcium (Ca) absorption efficiency."

2. Increases urinary calcium

Other studies have shown that supplementation with polygammaglutamic acid increases calcium absorption.

A 2003 paper published in the Journal of the Agricultural Chemical Society of Japan explained that supplementation with polygammaglutamic acid increased urinary calcium, an indicator of increased calcium absorption [2].

"In men, 4 hours after the intake of the test food (polygammaglutamic acid), the tendency of urinary calcium to increase compared to the intake of the control food was recognized. In view of this, the recognized increase in urinary calcium from the intake of the test food seems to suggest an increase in calcium absorption."
3. Helps reduce body mass

GABA is a major inhibitory neurotransmitter synthesized from glutamic acid. GABA stimulates the brain's metabolism and circulation, stabilizes the mind, and induces a good night's sleep. Intake of polygammaglutamic acid increases the concentration of glutamic acid and GABA in serum and brain tissue.

In this regard, a 2021 study was published in Nutrition Research and Practice that reported that subjects who took polygammaglutamic acid and vitamin B6 supplements increased their sleep duration and improved sleep quality [3].

"We found that study participants who took dual polygammaglutamic acid (γ-PGA) and vitamin B6 (VitB6) supplements experienced increased sleep duration and improved sleep quality."

Today, we've looked at the benefits of taking polygammaglutamic acid. Finally, we'll tell you about other ways you can increase calcium absorption. Vitamin D helps increase calcium absorption in the cells of the mucous membranes of the small intestine, so taking vitamin D can help increase calcium absorption. In addition, calcium and phosphorus have the property of interfering with the absorption of the other when the amount of one is high, so it is recommended to consume calcium and phosphorus in a similar ratio at meals.

I hope you have a healthy day in body and mind. It was Jinny.
