[Effects of Zinc] Why is Zinc Important For

Collagen Synthesis?

Effects of Zinc
1. Reduces collagen breakdown
2. Bone formation through collagen synthesis
3. Improves inflammatory acne

Hello, I am Jinny, a pharmacist.

Not long ago, we introduced you to three vitamins that work synergistically with collagen. Many people expressed interest and said, “I didn’t know that vitamins A, C, and E helped collagen synthesis.”

So today, I would like to explain about zinc, another essential nutrient that not only creates good synergy with collagen, but also helps the skin in many ways.

1. Inhibits Collagen Breakdown

How did you usually think about zinc? Ordinary people may think of it as a nutrient that they don't have to eat. Scholars have considered zinc an essential trace element for life since the early 20th century. This is because zinc is involved in the synthesis of DNA and RNA and acts on cell division, making it essential for maintaining normal human functions such as growth, reproduction, and immune function.

A study published in Surgery, Gynecology & Obstetrics in 1981 found that zinc treatment reduces collagen decomposition during the wound healing process.

“This could be explained by the fact that the rate of collagen breakdown in granulation tissue is reduced by zinc administration.”

Reference :  Tengrup I, Ahonen J, Zederfeldt B (1981). Influence of zinc on synthesis and the accumulation of collagen in early granulation tissue. Surgery, Gynecology & Obstetrics, 152(3), 323-326.
2. Bone Formation Through Collagen Synthesis

Did you know that collagen exists not only in skin, but also in tissues such as bones, cartilage, and ligaments? Therefore, in orthopedics, collagen is injected to regenerate damaged tissues and reduce pain. Likewise, collagen synthesis is very important for the creation of these tissues.

In 2010, a paper was published in Nutrition Research and Practice demonstrating that zinc contributes to bone formation by stimulating collagen synthesis.

“The results of this study suggest that zinc may increase osteogenic effects by stimulating cell proliferation, ALP activity, and collagen synthesis in osteoblasts.”

Reference :  Seo, H. J., Cho, Y. E., Kim, T., Shin, H. I., & Kwun, I. S. (2010). Zinc may increase bone formation through stimulating cell proliferation, alkaline phosphatase activity and collagen synthesis in osteoblastic MC3T3-E1 cells. Nutrition research and practice, 4(5), 356–361.
3. Improves Inflammatory Acne

Each person has different skin concerns depending on their innate conditions. Some people may be concerned that their skin is not bright or seems to lack elasticity, while others may be concerned about incessant acne. However, acne is different from other skin concerns in that it is a clear ‘disease’ that can lead to social phobia and depression in severe cases.

This is good news for those who are stressed about acne. As academic reports accumulating that zinc has antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and sebum production reducing effects, a study using zinc to treat inflammatory acne was published in Dermatology in 2001.

“Minocycline (a type of tetracycline antibiotic) and zinc gluconate are both effective in treating inflammatory acne.”

Reference :  Dreno B, Moyse D, Alirezai M, Amblard P, Auffret N, Beylot C, Bodokh I, Chivot M, Daniel F, Humbert P, Meynadier J, Poli F (2001). Acne Research and Study Group. Multicenter randomized comparative double-blind controlled clinical trial of the safety and efficacy of zinc gluconate versus minocycline hydrochloride in the treatment of inflammatory acne vulgaris. Dermatology, 203(2),135-40.

Today, we looked at the various benefits of zinc that have been proven in papers. Beyond skin health, you should know that in order to maintain normal function of our body, it is important to consume essential nutrients such as zinc to avoid deficiency.

I hope you have a healthy day both physically and mentally. This was Jinny.
