Effects of Collagen
1. Improves hair dryness and shine
2. Improves hair thickness
3. Osteoarthritis and cartilage recovery

Hello, I am Jinny, a pharmacist.

What comes to mind when you think of ‘collagen’? You usually think of it as a nutritional ingredient for skin health, such as elasticity and wrinkle improvement.

As collagen has become widely used as an inner beauty material, reviews have also been reported saying, ‘When I took collagen for skin care, even my hair improved.’ In fact, because collagen is a major component that makes up not only skin but also human tissues such as hair and cartilage, the academic world is paying attention to the public's experience and conducting various studies, believing that collagen intake may have a positive effect on hair.

Therefore, today we will take a look at the hair-related benefits of collagen that you may not have been aware of.

1. Improves Hair Dryness and Shine

Collagen is an ingredient that can be synthesized in the body, but its decomposition speed increases due to aging or exposure to ultraviolet rays. The most typical symptoms of this are hair weakness and wrinkles forming on the skin.

Therefore, while attempts to improve the condition of human tissue through collagen intake continued, in 2014, research results was published in Nutrition & Food on the effects of nutritional supplements containing collagen on nails, hair, and the outer surface of the skin.

"Of the subjects who initially had more severe symptoms, 95% had dry and dull hair, 85% had cracked and peeling nails, and 65% had significant improvements in nail hardness. The authors concluded that this nutritional supplement was effective in providing complete hair, nail and skin care. We conclude that it should be considered an important, effective, and possibly necessary component of the diet.”

2. Improves Hair Thickness

As research on the effects of collagen intake on various tissues of the human body progresses, in 2020, a paper was published in Nutrafoods that more intensively studied the relationship between collagen intake and hair. This study sheds light on the effects of oral intake of collagen on hair thickness and hair follicle cells.

“(Above Excluded) Oral intake of a specific BCP (bioactive collagen peptide) resulted in a statistically significant increase in hair thickness compared to placebo.”

3. Osteoarthritis and Cartilage Recovery

As aging progresses, it is not only skin and hair that gradually lose strength. Especially, interest in cartilage and joint health increases.

In 2020, a study was reported in Rheumatology and Therapy on the effects of collagen derivatives on osteoarthritis and cartilage repair.

“Current evidence shows that supplementation with collagen derivatives, either as food ingredients (oral collagen hydrolyzate or raw collagen) or drugs (intraarticular collagen hydrolyzate), may be a potential treatment or support strategy for patients with osteoarthritis."

Today, we looked at the various benefits of collagen through the paper. Cortisol, a hormone secreted when stressed, breaks down collagen, so to keep hair, skin, and other tissues healthy, you need to pay attention not only to collagen intake but also to stress management.

I hope you have a healthy day both physically and mentally. This was Jinny.
