Hello, I am Jinny, a pharmacist.

Dieting seems to be a common concern for many people, which is why new dietary supplements appear continuously year after year. Today, I'd like to introduce you to the "Cissus Diet," which is gaining popularity and is often referred to as "magical powder."

Cissus is a plant belonging to the grape family, known for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties. It has been used in traditional Indian Ayurvedic medicine for a long time. More recently, the action of various flavonoids found in Cissus has been linked to its anti-obesity effects.

In 2018, the Korean Food and Drug Administration recognized the functionality of Cissus extract for reducing body fat, and it has since become popular as a dietary supplement in Korea. People who have actually tried the Cissus Diet have shared reviews such as "my waistline has decreased" and "I've lost weight."

So, what are the real effects that have been proven by research? Let's take a look.

1. Reduces Body Weight, Body Fat, and Waist Circumference

Do you know that, even with the same level of obesity, an increase in waist circumference raises the risk of various obesity-related complications? In other words, abdominal obesity is particularly dangerous compared to gaining weight in other parts of the body.

Let me share the results of a human clinical trial conducted in 2019. In this study, participants who were classified as overweight were instructed to take 300mg of Cissus leaf and stem extract daily.

After 8 weeks, there was a significant decrease not only in body weight and body fat but also in waist circumference compared to the placebo group.

"After 8 weeks of treatment, participants in the placebo group experienced a 1.05% decrease in body fat as determined by bioelectrical impedance analysis, but there was no significant difference when using DEXA. During the same period, the group taking Cissus extract showed a significant decrease in body fat of 8.9% measured by impedance and 12.8% measured by DEXA. These values were significantly lower than the placebo group. In comparison to the placebo, the Cissus extract group exhibited significant reductions in waist and hip circumference, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, total cholesterol, triglycerides, fasting blood glucose, and leptin levels."

2. Increases Adiponectin Levels

Even for those who are managing their diet and exercise, weight loss may still be a challenge, and hormonal imbalance could be a contributing factor.

In our bodies, various hormones interact to regulate body weight, and one of the key hormones is adiponectin. Adiponectin is a hormone secreted by fat cells and is often referred to as the "good hormone" because it inhibits fat synthesis and promotes fat burning.

The study mentioned earlier, demonstrated that the intake of Cissus extract significantly increased serum adiponectin levels.

"While the serum leptin levels of the Cissus extract group significantly decreased, their adiponectin levels significantly increased."

3. Antidiabetic

In addition to obesity, diabetes is also a prevalent adult disease. When high blood sugar levels persist due to diabetes, oxidative stress and inflammation increase due to reactive oxygen species (ROS). Consequently, various complications related to diabetes can develop. Therefore, if you have been diagnosed with diabetes, it is crucial to pay special attention to blood sugar management.

Cissus has been the subject of numerous studies not only for its anti-obesity effects but also for its potential in anti-diabetic activity. Historically, in regions where Cissus has been cultivated, it has been used for the treatment of diabetes.

In the academic community, it is speculated that the anti-diabetic activity of Cissus is due to various bioactive compounds found in Cissus, and it may lower blood sugar levels and perform antioxidant and anti-inflammatory functions.

"Our research clearly demonstrated that Cissus stem possesses strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity in STZ/niacinamide-induced diabetic rats. Cissus stem exerts its effects by upregulating antioxidant status and downregulating inflammatory pathways. The beneficial effects of Cissus stem could be compared to the anti-diabetic drug metformin. The phenolic compounds present in Cissus stem may serve as potential candidates to delay the progression of diabetic complications. Therefore, dietary supplementation with Cissus stem could be beneficial for the management of diabetic complications and may be developed as a new food additive or drug component for diabetes prevention."

Ethyl acetate fraction of Cissus quadrangularis stem ameliorates hyperglycaemia-mediated oxidative stress and suppresses inflammatory response in nicotinamide/streptozotocin induced type 2 diabetic rats. Today, we've learned about the effects of the Cissus Diet. In human clinical trials, Cissus has been shown to provide substantial assistance in weight loss, reduction of body fat, and waist circumference. It also enhances the levels of the beneficial hormone adiponectin, known for its fat-burning properties. Additionally, it is an active area of research for its anti-diabetic properties.

However, it's important to note that while Cissus extract with body fat reduction functionality has been reviewed for safety by the regulatory authorities, it does have glucose-lowering effects. Therefore, if you are taking blood glucose-lowering medications, you should exercise caution when considering its consumption.

I hope you have a healthy day both physically and mentally. This was Jinny.
