1. Improves acute diarrhea and various diarrhea symptoms
2. Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
3. Anti-Candida

Hello, I am Jinny, a pharmacist.

You may have had the experience of being prescribed a bowel movement medication at the same time as being prescribed antibiotics at the hospital. To prevent side effects such as indigestion, abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhea that occur when beneficial bacteria in the body die due to the action of antibiotics, a colonizer is also prescribed. Today, we will learn about Saccharomyces boulardii, the main ingredient in bowel preparations prescribed to relieve the side effects of antibiotics.

Saccharomyces Boulardii is a type of probiotic, and because it is a yeast rather than a bacteria, it is characterized by strong survival ability even in high temperatures and acidic environments. Because of this, it survives even in very aggravated intestinal environments such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. A characteristic of Saccharomyces boulardii is its antibacterial ability, which is as strong as its survival ability.

1. Improves Acute Diarrhea and Diarrhea Symptoms

Have you ever experienced sudden abdominal pain and diarrhea when eating cold food, spicy or salty food, or while traveling? Clinical research results showing that Saccharomyces boulardii is useful in improving acute diarrhea symptoms have been consistently reported in academia.

This year, the results of a meta-study was published in the Journal of Fungi that comprehensively reviewed existing papers on Saccharomyces boulardii. This study reports the results of a review of major clinical studies on Saccharomyces boulardii as follows.

“It has been observed to contribute to the improvement of various diarrhea symptoms, including childhood diarrhea, antibiotic-related diarrhea, acute diarrhea, traveler's diarrhea caused by bacteria, viruses, or parasites, and enteral nutrition-related diarrhea.”

2. Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

You may have experienced it yourself or seen it around you at least once, a situation where you rush to the bathroom when you are stressed. Medically, it is diagnosed as ‘irritable bowel syndrome.’ It is a phenomenon that occurs particularly frequently among test takers, and for those who suffer from this symptom, it can be a significant stressor.

The same paper introduced earlier also reviews clinical studies on the improvement of irritable bowel syndrome with Saccharomyces boulardii and reports the results.

“Symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), which involves frequent abdominal distension, abdominal pain, and intestinal communication disorders, also showed improvement with the administration of Saccharomyces boulardii.”

3. Anti-Candida

Research results have reported that Saccharomyces boulardii, which is characterized by strong survival and antibacterial properties, is helpful in eliminating not only intestinal diseases but also Candida bacteria. Candida is generally known as the causative agent of vaginitis, and in addition, it is a fungus that has been identified as the cause of skin diseases, indigestion, reflux esophagitis, and chronic fatigue.

In 2009, a study was published in FEMS Yeast Research that revealed the anti-Candida mechanism of Saccharomyces boulardii.

“This suggests that Saccharomyces boulardii could be used for the prevention and treatment of Candida-induced infections.”

Today, we briefly looked at the main functions of Saccharomyces boulardii that have been verified in academia. Please do not forget that Saccharomyces boulardii is not a resident bacterium in the human intestine, so continuous intake is important.

I hope you have a healthy day both physically and mentally. This was Jinny.
