Shark liver oil of memories, it's a better ingredient than you think.
2. Suppression
of postoperative complications
Hello. I'm a pharmacist Jinny.
Do you remember the shark liver oil that used to be in every house? The first supplement I saw when I was a kid was shark liver oil. I just remember the capsule being enormous. Shark liver oil is a nutritional supplement that has been around for so long that it is easy to neglect it compared to the latest ingredients, but in fact, shark liver oil is an ingredient that has been used in clinical practice as an adjuvant treatment and prevention for a long time.
Shark liver oil, which has been consumed by fishermen in Norway and Sweden since ancient times to improve health, began to attract the attention of the scientific community in 1922 when the existence of the key ingredient 'alkoxyglycerol' was reported. Initially, clinical studies have been attempted in the treatment of leukemia, and more recently, it has been studied as an adjunctive treatment to prevent radiation sickness caused by chemotherapy [1].
Based on the results of such academic research, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety of Korea has also recognized shark liver oil, which contains more than 18% of the key ingredient alkoxyglycerol, as a functional ingredient that boosts immunity as "shark liver oil containing alkoxyglycerol."
What kind of research has been done to determine the potential potential as an adjuvant treatment for leukemia and radiation sickness, and today we will take a look at the representative benefits of shark liver oil containing alkoxyglycerol, which is a more powerful ingredient than you might think.
A tumor is a deviation from the body's regulatory mechanisms and the autonomousness of cells and overgrowth. It is easy to understand that cells have proliferated pathologically and created physiologically meaningless tissues. Fibroids that are relatively easy to recover are classified as benign tumors, and cancers and sarcomas with a high mortality rate are classified as malignant tumors.
Therefore, the anti-tumor activity is evaluated as a potential for cancer treatment, and a 2013 study report based on the previous study showing that alkoxyglycerol-containing shark liver oil can inhibit tumor growth confirmed the anti-tumor effect of shark liver oil supplementation, and the authors present the following conclusions [2].
"Shark liver oil has shown significant antitumor effects in vivo. These results suggest that chronic supplementation of shark liver oil may adjuvant anti-cancer therapy."
Just as red ginseng has been consumed in Korea for hundreds of years before its function was scientifically identified, it is known that shark liver oil has been consumed for a long time in Scandinavia for the purpose of wound healing and health promotion. As the various benefits of consuming alkoxyglycerol-containing shark liver oil have been scientifically identified, so have the benefits associated with 'wound healing'.
A 2014 study in Marine Drugs reported the results of a clinical trial on whether the consumption of shark liver oil could affect recovery in older adults (bodies with very poor physical resilience) when undergoing surgical procedures (severe trauma), and found that the incidence of postoperative complications was significantly reduced in the shark liver oil treatment group [3].
"The incidence of complications was reduced in the alkoxyglycerol-containing shark liver oil group, and adherence to natural treatment was excellent without serious side effects. ... For effective regulation of leukocytes and soluble immune reactivity, it is suggested to consume 500 mg of shark liver oil twice a day before undergoing surgical treatment."
Including the aforementioned studies, the antitumor benefits of alkoxyglycerol-containing shark liver oil and the inhibition of complications have been shown through immune boosting mechanisms. Consumption of alkoxyglycerol-containing shark liver oil has been shown to increase lymphocytes and white blood cells, which play a major role in cellular immunity, especially T cells and neutrophils.
However, since most of the studies were conducted in vitro or in patients, there has also been research into whether these benefits are replicated in "healthy people." In 2010, the results of a human trial of shark liver oil in healthy adults were reported to the academic community, and this study showed that the use of shark liver oil improved the immune markers of healthy adults [4].
"In the frontal lobe function test (rule shift) and the Paced Audicial Serial Addition Test (PASAT), which measures sustained attention but also includes frontal lobe function, the group treated with ginkgo biloba performed significantly better than the placebo group."
Today, we looked at shark liver oil, an ingredient that has various benefits ranging from boosting immunity to anti-tumor, and many studies suggest daily consumption because no side effects have been reported. However, since the main variable controlled in the research report is 'alkoxyglycerol', it is more beneficial to choose shark liver oil, a health functional food whose content of alkoxyglycerol has been confirmed by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety.
I hope you have a healthy day in body and mind. It was Jinny.
