Today, marriage partners are carefully considered. There are quite a few people who first try to find a partner and adjust their lifestyle habits by living together before getting married.

However, according to the Wall Street Journal, those in their 20s who married without cohabitation had a lower divorce rate than those in their 30s who married after careful consideration. Those who lived before marriage had a 15% higher divorce rate, and those who had lived with another partner before marriage had a divorce rate that was twice as high. Can premarital cohabitation increase the divorce rate? This column concludes that if you're a young woman who fears divorce, it's okay to get married in your 20s and not wait until your 30s. Do couples who live before marriage really get divorced?

The Problem of Premarital Cohabitation

Premarital cohabitation has its advantages. As you live together, you will learn about your partner's lifestyle habits and bad habits that you didn't know about, so you can choose your spouse more carefully. However, arranging your life ahead of time does not necessarily mean that you will get a better marriage.

First, even if you live before marriage, it is impossible to predict the perfection of your marriage with your partner. Especially in Korea, there is an important difference between cohabitation and marriage. It's my parents. When you live together, your parents-in-law don't interfere, but after you get married, you can invite your daughter-in-law to your in-laws' events or give her advice, which can make a very strong difference in your relationship.

Second, if you live together for a long time, it can be difficult to enter into marriage. This is because while an active sex life can be maintained to a certain extent, passionate love has a lifespan of up to three years.

The Relationship Between Premarital Cohabitation and Divorce Rates

So, does premarital cohabitation really increase divorce rates? Long-term cohabitation for a short period of 6 months~1 year or more is not registered as marriage, but it has the same weight as marriage in terms of relationship. Breaking up with a partner who has lived with you for 6~7 years is the same process as divorce for a married couple. Therefore, it can be assumed that a person who has lived with a partner for a long period of time and then broke up with them is more likely to break up with someone else in the future.

The Right Time to Get Married

When it comes to marriage itself, one might say that your 20s are the best time to go. But marriage is not the only element that shapes our lives. If you're prioritizing your career, self-actualization, and other things that make up your life, you probably don't have to fret about getting married later.

In the past, the average age of marriage in our society was lower than it is now. This is because they were not at a low age to become financially independent from their families. However, as societies become more complex, independence naturally slows down, and the average age of marriage increases. There is no one answer to the question of when to get married.
