Laser treatment for conjunctival cysts consists of placing one or two drops of anesthetic in the patient's eye, popping the conjunctival cyst with a thin needle, and irradiating it with the laser.
Originally, the laser is not absorbed by white tissues such as the conjunctiva. Using a laser to burst a conjunctival cyst requires a very large amount of energy, which carries a high risk of damaging the surrounding tissue. However, by marking the surface of the cyst with a surgical pen and irradiating it with a laser, it is possible to minimize damage to the surrounding tissues with less heat energy and eliminate the space between the cysts.
The success rate of the procedure is 82.4% at one time, which is very high. In about 2 treatments, most conjunctival cysts are removed.
Traditionally, puncture* has been used to open the conjunctival cyst directly with a needle. But when you burst a cyst like this, the water inside flows out, but the cyst stays there. If the water filled again, there was a risk that the cyst would swell and recur.
*Puncture: A method of piercing the human body with needles.
In the end, surgery was needed to open the thin conjunctiva that encased the whites of the skin and remove all the cysts. In fact, removing a cyst is easier said than done. The conjunctiva of the white of the egg is very thin, so if there is a clump in the process of lifting it, it will easily burst. Again, this sac was not completely removed, which caused a recurrence after surgery. Therefore, in addition to the burden on patients, the limitations of the surgical method were also pointed out.
On the other hand, laser treatment for conjunctival cysts is performed easily and takes about 2 minutes without any burden, and since there is no need to stitch the cyst, there is much less foreign body sensation or redness even after surgery.
If the cyst is small, the patient may not notice the symptoms. I think there are a lot of people who come up without realizing it and then disappear at some point.
However, patients who usually come to the hospital have cysts that do not disappear for a long time, which spoils the aesthetics or causes bleeding around the cysts. For these people, laser treatment is recommended instead of puncture, which has a high recurrence rate.
Since laser treatment uses heat energy, some patients complain of discomfort after surgery. But most of the time, it gets better in a week or so.
If you have any inconveniences, I hope you do not hesitate to consult a specialist and undergo regular eye examinations.
