If your menstrual cycle is 26 days or less, you should consider egg freezing
The number of gold misses who are delaying marriage and childbirth is increasing. If pregnancy is delayed due to social activities, why not store healthy eggs in advance? Egg freezing among women in their mid-to-late 30s is increasing. According to a survey by the Ministry of Health and Welfare, as of September last year, a total of 4,586 eggs were frozen and stored at 26 medical institutions in Korea. Singer Lee Ji Hye also said on MBC variety show Radio Star that she is storing frozen eggs.
As a matter of employee welfare, some companies are even subsidizing the cost of egg freezing. Global companies such as Apple and Facebook have been providing egg freezing costs to their female employees for 2~3 years. We met with Lee Hee-sun, the director of Seoul Rachel Women's Clinic, who is performing egg freezing procedures, and heard about egg freezing.
What age is egg freezing recommended?
If you decide to freeze your eggs due to infertility or late marriage, it is best to do it before the age of 40. As with in vitro fertilization, successful pregnancies are most likely when eggs are frozen at a young age.
Egg freezing is better at a younger age, but in practice, it's not easy to decide to freeze eggs before the age of 35. Since egg freezing after the age of 40 greatly reduces the success rate of pregnancy, it is recommended to freeze eggs before the age of 40 and at the latest before the age of 42.
If you are concerned about the decline of ovarian function, egg freezing is recommended.
Ovarian function decreases with age. Depending on the individual, some women may develop ovarian deterioration rapidly even at a young age. Decreased ovarian function can be suspected if the menstrual cycle decreases to 26 days or less. Ultrasound and blood tests can also be used to assess ovarian function.
Recently, AMH (anti-Mullerian hormone) and FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone) have been used as good indicators of ovarian function in blood tests. Between 2~4 days of menstruation, the level of female hormones follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH) can be measured through blood tests, and the size of the ovaries can be measured by ultrasound to predict the health status of the ovaries and the degree of aging.
What is the procedure and cost of egg cryopreservation procedure?
Before the procedure, the patient's basic tests such as blood tests and ultrasound examinations are performed. Ovulation-promoting injections are given from the third day of menstruation for egg retrieval, and egg retrieval surgery is usually performed on the 13th day of menstruation.
Egg retrieval surgery is performed through the vagina under sleep anesthesia. There is no significant pain because sleep anesthesia is used, but you may feel mild abdominal pain for a day or so after the procedure, so it is better to rest on that day.
Egg freezing is standard using the 'vitrified egg freezing method'. Slush nitrogen is used to rapidly freeze eggs at minus 210 degrees Celsius. After that, the thawed eggs are artificially inseminated by making a hole in the egg wall with a fine needle and injecting sperm inside.
The cost of the transplant will be subtracted from the cost of the regular IVF. Excluding the examination fee, the cost of the treatment is around 3 million won. Depending on the individual, the amount of ovulation promotion injections may vary, so the cost may vary.
What is the success rate of egg freezing?
In order to reliably thaw an egg and become pregnant, an average of 12 to 15 frozen eggs are needed. This is because eggs are not more stable for freezing than fertilized eggs, so the quality of eggs may decrease after freezing.
However, in recent years, with the rapid development of technology, the egg survival rate has improved to 80~90%. The egg survival rate of Seoul Rachel Women's Clinic is 99.2%. They also pay attention to safety. When freezing eggs, different refrigeration tanks are used according to the presence of various viral diseases through infection testing.
In fact, sperm freezing and fertilized egg freezing are safer than egg freezing.
Sperm freezing and fertilized egg freezing are more recommended than egg freezing. Although advances in medical technology have improved egg survival, there is still a risk of egg damage during the freezing and thawing process. In the case of fertilized egg freezing or sperm freezing, it is very stable for freezing. If possible, freezing a fertilized egg is much better than egg freezing in terms of pregnancy rate.
