I experience ruining my trip due to abdominal pain and diarrhea at my travel destination

We've all had the experience of having an unexpected stomach ache or diarrhea ruin a trip while traveling. If you are planning to travel abroad before the end of the year, you may want to consider taking probiotics.

In a paper titled 'Prevention Efficacy of Probiotics for Traveler's Diarrhea (TD): An Adaptive Meta-Analysis of a Randomized Controlled Trial' published in the Journal of the Korean Society of Epidemiology (EPIH) in August 2018, Prof. Bae Jong-myun announced that probiotics were effective in preventing traveler's diarrhea.

Traveler's diarrhea, commonly referred to as "water change," is most common when visiting Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and Central and South America. Diarrhea continues 3~5 times a day, accompanied by nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, fever, etc.

Traveler's diarrhea is mainly caused by harmful bacteria such as E. coli caused by contaminated food and water. As bacteria are more likely to be activated in areas with high humidity and temperature, the rate of E. coli infection increases.

I Let's take probiotics to prevent diarrhea

To prevent traveler's diarrhea, it's a good idea to take probiotics, which increase the number of beneficial bacteria in the intestine and suppress the harmful bacteria. In the meantime, there has been disagreement about the efficacy of probiotics for traveler's diarrhea.

According to the 2017 ISTM (International Society of Travel Medicine) guidelines, there is 'insufficient evidence to recommend the use of probiotics for the prevention or treatment of TD'. However, Professor Bae analyzed the results of 11 studies and found that probiotics showed statistically significant efficacy in preventing traveler's diarrhea.

Probiotics prevent infectious diarrhea by balancing beneficial and harmful bacteria in the gut. Several studies have already shown that probiotics are effective in treating and preventing infectious diarrheal diseases in children. In a 2015 study titled "Efficacy of probiotic use for acute rotavirus diarrhoea in children," a meta-analysis of 14 studies found that the probiotic group had a positive effect on reducing the duration of acute rotavirus diarrhoea compared to the control group.

According to the 2010 Recommendation on Practice Guidelines for Digestive Infections published by the Korean Society of Infectious Diseases, the Korean Society of Chemotherapy, and the Korean Society of Clinical Microbiology, probiotics are recommended for the treatment of infectious diarrheal diseases not only in children but also in adults, and they help prevent them.
