What is avedro X-tra LASIK?

In order to pursue the convenience of bright eyes and freedom from glasses at the same time, many people are looking for vision correction procedures such as LASIK and LASEK. However, although it is still rare, there are concerns about side effects such as corneal ectasia, keratoconus, and myopia degeneration, and there are many cases where people are hesitant to undergo surgery because they are worried about this. In order to minimize these side effects, a variety of preoperative work-ups are essential.
At the same time, corneal strengthening surgery (AveBed Extra surgery), which can increase surgical safety and satisfaction, has recently received a lot of attention.
Extra LASIK/LASEK is a highly developed LASIK·LASEK and corneal enhancement surgery (corneal cross-linking, CXL) are combined together to correct vision more accurately and safely. This is a procedure that uses riboflavin (vitamin B2) and Avered KXL System during LASIK/LASEK surgery to increase the binding force of collagen that makes up the cornea, thereby increasing the biomechanical force and making the cornea stronger. Abed Extra LASIK/LASEK strengthens the weakened cornea by approximately 150%.
The procedure of the Aved Extra surgery combined with LASEK is as follows:
After LASEK surgery, a vitamin B2 solution called riboflavin is applied to the surface of the cornea cut in step 1 with Avebed Extra and absorbed into the cornea. In two stages, ultraviolet (UVA) light is applied to activate and strengthen the drug.
As riboflavin absorbs UV rays, it cross-binds collagen, the main component of the cornea, making the cornea more elastic and firm (2-3 minutes total). This helps prevent complications of corneal weakening and myopia degeneration and maintain corrected vision.
Samsung Ophthalmology recommends Avered Extra Corneal Enhancement Surgery in the following cases:
1. To prevent corneal ectasia in cases of severe myopia – a large amount of corneal tissue to be surgically removed due to severe astigmatism (33%) or a low expected postoperative residual keratin volume (RST) (350-380 micron)
2. If the central corneal thickness is thin before surgery (less than 470-480 micron), corneal enhancement surgery
3. To prevent keratoconus in case of irregular or weak corneal shape before surgery
4. If you have farsightedness or nearsightedness that tends to degenerate your vision, and you want to maintain your vision for a long time.
Riboflavin is classified as a Very Safe Substance (GRAS) by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and can be ingested in food or made in the body. Avered's riboflavin is sterilely packaged for one eye procedure, and the Avered system is the only strictly disposable corneal cross-linking (CXL) device.
More than 100,000 procedures have been performed in more than 55 countries, including Avered, LASIK, and LASEK Extra, and thousands of procedures have been performed in South Korea. Of these, there have been no cases of Keratoconus, one of the side effects of LASIK or LASEK.
After Abed Estra keratotopomy, side effects such as increased corneal microopacities and increased intraocular pressure have been reported in rare cases, so sufficient consultation is required before the procedure.
