Our bodies are influenced by our genes and environment. Some people get sick because of a congenital condition, and some because of their lifestyle habits. So where does obesity fall between congenital and acquired factors?
What is the gene that makes you gain weight, the FTO gene mutation?
One of the most well-known obesity genes that cause weight gain is the FTO gene (fat mass and obesity-associated gene). The FTO gene is the first of the obesity genes to be discovered, and certain mutations in this gene lead to increased appetite, lower satiety, and lower energy expenditure by fat cells. In fact, people with FTO mutations weigh an average of 3 kilograms more, and are more likely to become obese as a child.
Since the discovery of the FTO gene mutation, the phrase "obesity is due to cursed genes" has become widely circulated. However, it is important to note that having an FTO gene mutation does not necessarily mean that you will be obese. It only increases the probability of becoming obese, but this probability can be changed by individual effort.
Effect of FTO gene mutation on diet
So, what does FTO gene mutation do when we diet? Does it be harder for people with FTO mutations to lose weight?
A total of 9,563 participants in the study were from North America, South America and Europe, ranging in age from 28 to 74 years old. This phenomenon was observed in everyone, regardless of diet method, duration, gender, race, and degree of obesity before starting the diet.
In other words, even if there is an innate gene that causes obesity, the gene can be overcome through the efforts of the acquired individual. This research does not give a fatalistic message that our bodies are determined by our genes, but a hopeful message that we can overcome them according to our will. In fact, numerous genetic mutations have been discovered to date, including FTO gene mutations, but with the exception of a few powerful dogs, many can be overcome through environmental factors such as dietary habits.
Whether you carry the obesity gene or not, one thing that hasn't changed is the importance of healthy eating habits. Therefore, the most fundamental task we have to do is to cultivate a healthy eating habit today compared to yesterday.
