One of the problems that men have as they age is related to the prostate. The prostate is an organ that surrounds the urethra below the bladder. As the prostate enlarges with age, the nearby urethra and bladder become compressed, making it difficult to urinate and causing uncomfortable nighttime trips. The prevalence of this enlarged prostate is said to be about 40% among men over the age of 65.

Recently, there is an ingredient that has been shown to be good for these prostate problems. It's called 'saw palmetto'.
Benefits of Saw Palmetto
Saw palmetto is the fruit of the saw palm. These fruits contain fatty acids and plant sterols*. Among them, a fatty acid ingredient called loric acid is effective in improving urine flow rate, urination frequency, and residual sensation, and has been recognized by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety as a functional ingredient that helps maintain prostate health. In fact, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety recommends 70~115 mg of loric acid as a daily intake.
*Sterols: Structural lipids found in most plants, animals, and fungi (fungi), and the most common sterol in animals is cholesterol.

So, how can saw palmetto support prostate health? The reason for the enlargement of the prostate gland is due to a male hormone called testosterone. Testosterone is converted into DHT, a substance called dihydrotestosterone, which increases as we age, causing our prostate to enlarge. Saw palmetto inhibits this conversion process while preventing the prostate from enlargement.

Precautions for Saw Palmetto

The first thing you need to know is that saw palmetto is not a cure, but a supplement. There are treatments available for enlarged prostate, such as Harunaldi, Avodart, and Prosper. If you have symptoms of an enlarged prostate, you can visit a urologist to get a clear diagnosis and improve your symptoms with these treatments. Therefore, supplements such as saw palmetto should be taken in addition.

The second is the side effects. Saw palmetto is a relatively safe ingredient, but in rare cases, it can have digestive side effects. If you experience symptoms such as diarrhea, nausea, or vomiting, it is recommended that you take saw palmetto after meals. However, if you feel dizzy or dizzy after taking saw palmetto, you should stop taking it.

Finally, because saw palmetto has some anticlotting effects, if you are taking blood-thinning medications such as aspirin, you should be careful not to overdose on saw palmetto.
