Vitamin D is really important. If someone asked me to choose just one of all the supplements, I would choose vitamin D without hesitation. Until now, there have been no supplements that can prolong life. However, it's very likely that vitamin D will be the first supplement that will increase your lifespan.
The vitamins got their names in the order of their discovery. They are not in order to indicate their medical importance. The first thing to be discovered was vitamin A. Vitamin D was discovered fourth after B and C. This vitamin was discovered in 1922 when a dog suffering from rickets was fed fish liver oil and its symptoms improved.
Vitamin D, unlike other vitamins, is synthesized in the skin through sunlight and ultraviolet radiation. Therefore, it is argued that it should be classified as a hormone and not as a vitamin. What matters is the intention of the Creator. Why is vitamin D designed to be synthesized by the body on its own, as opposed to other vitamins that must be obtained from food? Paradoxically, because vitamin D is so important to human survival and health, I interpret it as an evolutionary evolution of the gene that produces vitamin D.
What role does vitamin D play in your body? Its most well-known role is to make bones strong. It aids in the absorption of calcium in the intestine and promotes the formation of bones. A lack of vitamin D can lead to rickets in newborns and children, and osteomalacia in adults. Until the 1930's, neonatal rickets was very common even in developed countries such as the United States. The disease was decisively reduced when vitamin D began to be artificially synthesized and mixed into foods such as milk and marketed. In the U.S., most dairy farmers voluntarily add 100 IU of vitamin D per 200 ml cup of milk. In Canada, it is legally mandatory to add 35~40 IU of vitamin D per 100ml of milk.
Vitamin D intake is very important for breastfed newborns. This is because, although breast milk is a near-perfect food rich in nutrients compared to cow's milk, it has the disadvantage that it contains very little vitamin D. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that breastfed newborns be given 400 IU of vitamin D supplement daily until weaning. Vitamin D also plays an important role in bone health in older adults. In the United States, half of elderly patients with hip fractures had very low vitamin D blood levels of 12 ng/ml or less. As a result of giving these elderly people 700~800 IU of vitamin D daily, hip fractures were reduced by about 26%.
