These days, more and more people are looking for lactic acid bacteria for basic health care. However, did you know that lactic acid bacteria have a variety of strains and their functions vary depending on the combination of the strains, so there are not many strains that have been verified in academia?
Today, we will look at the representative strains and functions of two representative strains verified through continuous research in academia, Lactobacillus acidophilus and bifidobacterium lactis .
1. Antiviral
Methods of suppressing human infection by viruses are continuously being studied. In particular, research on materials that can protect the mucosal cell wall, which are vulnerable to infection, are continuing, and surface layer protein is attracting attention as a type of protective material.
Focusing on the fact that this surface layer protein is commonly found in bacteria of the genus Lactobacillus, a paper on the antiviral mechanism of Lactobacillus acidophilus was published in Front Microbiol in 2019 .
"The surface layer (S-layer) protein present in the cell membrane of Lactobacillus acidophilus can inhibit viral and bacterial infections by blocking the interaction of dendritic cell-specific intercellular adhesion molecules with pathogens "

2. Improve symptoms of functional bowel disease
The influence of the gut flora on the pathogenesis of functional bowel disease is a strong academic hypothesis. Accordingly, research has been actively conducted since the 2010s to find combinations of bacterial species and strains that can contribute to the improvement of intestinal diseases by changing the composition of the intestinal flora .
The paper I will introduce now is a paper published in J Clin Gastroentero in 2011. NCFM, a representative strain of Lactobacillus acidophilus, and Bi, a representative strain of Bifidobacterium lactis. We are reporting the results of a clinical trial evaluating the effect of the combination of -07 on the improvement of functional bowel disease .
" The fact that a significant decrease in the severity of abdominal bloating symptoms was consistently observed in the experimental group compared to the control group at both 4 and 8 weeks after the intervention, suggesting a significant impact of probiotic supplementation on the improvement of abdominal bloating "

3. Strengthen immune function
Many of you now know that lactic acid bacteria can contribute to strengthening the immune system. As reports on the enhancement of immune function of lactic acid bacteria continue to accumulate in academia, research is continuing to elucidate the types of bacteria that contribute to the enhancement of immune function and their mechanisms.
A paper published in J Nutr Sci in 2013 reveals the immune function enhancement mechanism of Bi-07, a representative strain of Bifidobacterium lactis , and suggests the implications of this mechanism for elderly health care .
" Supplementation of live Bi-07 cells may provide long-term health benefits to the elderly by enhancing the innate immune defense against infection but not causing inflammation-related metabolic disorders. "

Above, we briefly reviewed the functions of major strains and strains that have been verified in the academic world.
I hope you have a healthy day in body and mind. More than that, it was Jinny.
