[Efficacy of theanine] 3 effects of theanine, especially effective for relieving tension

theanine

When you are stressed and nervous, 'Theanine' is especially effective

Theanine Benefits
1. Reduces anxiety
2. Increases concentration
3. Reduces systolic and diastolic blood pressure after stressful situations

This is Jinny, the pharmacist.

It's unavoidable to feel a little nervous when taking an important exam or giving a presentation. However, there must have been times when you felt upset because you couldn’t show off your skills as much as you prepared because you were too nervous. So today, I would  like to introduce Theanine , which can help  those who are very nervous under stressful situations .

Theanine is an amino acid found in green tea and is responsible for the sweetness and umami of green tea. It has the effect of lowering tension, and has been recognized by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety  for its functionality of 'helping to relieve tension caused by stress' .

So let's find out how theanine intake helps with tension relief through the paper.

1. Reduce anxiety

When the mind is nervous, we often say 'anxiety'. When anxiety gets worse, it is difficult to get a good night's sleep, and you become tired and exhausted easily, as well as physical pain that seems to tighten your chest.

In this regard , a report was published in the Journal of Physiological Anthropology in 2012, which  found that taking theanine lowered anxiety .

“ The results of the emotional state profile after the mental task also showed that L-theanine lowered tension-anxiety scores compared to taking a placebo. ”

2. Increased concentration

When a person is anxious, their concentration also deteriorates.  If you lose concentration, even if you invest the same amount of time, the progress rate of the task will drop significantly.

In this regard, a study was published in the Journal of Functional Foods in 2011 that  theanine intake improved the concentration of subjects with high levels of anxiety .

“ The results clearly demonstrated that L-theanine had a marked effect on attentional performance and reaction time responses in healthy subjects with high anxiety. ”
Reference paper Higashiyama A., Htay H., Ozeki M., Juneja L. Kapoor M. Effects of L-theanine on attention and reaction time response (2011). Journal of Functional Foods: 3(3), 171-178.
3. Reducing systolic and diastolic blood pressure after stressful situations

Don't you say "blood pressure rises" when stress builds up? In fact, when you are stressed, the sympathetic nervous system is excited and promotes the secretion of hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol, which constricts blood vessels and makes the heart beat faster, raising blood pressure. So if you have high blood pressure, you need to manage your stress well.

The paper below  reveals the results of a study on the effect of theanine intake on systolic and diastolic blood pressure after a stressful situation .

" Oral administration of L-theanine significantly changed both systolic and diastolic blood pressure in the high-response group at the end of the mental task (AMT) compared to the placebo condition. "
Reference paper: Yoto, A., Motoki, M., Murao, S., & Yokogoshi, H. (2012). Effects of L-theanine or caffeine intake on changes in blood pressure under physical and psychological stresses. Journal of physiological anthropology, 31(1), 28 .

Today, we looked at the benefits of taking theanine through the thesis. Theanine has an antagonistic effect with  caffeine, so care should be taken not to consume it with caffeinated beverages such as coffee, black tea, and green tea .

I hope you have a healthy day in body and mind. It was Jinny.
