Effects of Green Coffee Bean
1. Reduction in body weight and BMI and increase in muscle mass compared to fat mass 2. Reduced appetite 3. Improved lipid metabolism
Hello, I am Jinny, a pharmacist.
‘Do you know about ‘diet coffee’? If you are interested in losing weight, you have probably heard of it at least once. Diet coffee is different from the regular coffee we usually drink.
Regular coffee is a beverage brewed by roasting coffee beans. Diet coffee uses green coffee beans as is, without roasting them. Because raw coffee beans have a green color, they are called green coffee beans.
The diet effect of green coffee beans is thanks to an ingredient called ‘chlorogenic acid’. Chlorogenic acid is a type of polyphenol and is known to have effects such as anti-obesity, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and liver protection through regulation of lipid and glucose metabolism. However, chlorogenic acid is weak to heat and is destroyed during the roasting process of coffee beans, so it is difficult to expect diet benefits from regular coffee.
Let’s take a closer look at green coffee beans through research papers.
1. Decrease Body Weight and Body Mass Index (BMI) and Increase Muscle Mass Compared to Fat Mass
How does the chlorogenic acid contained in green coffee beans work in our body, making it effective for dieting? Chlorogenic acid regulates glucose metabolism by reducing glucose absorption in the small intestine and inhibiting the activity of enzymes that produce glucose. In this situation, our body burns accumulated fat instead of glucose, resulting in weight loss.
In relation to this, let’s take a look at the human application test conducted in 2006? In this study, adults with a body mass index (BMI) over 25 took 200 mg green coffee bean extract capsules twice a day for 60 days. .
The results showed that body weight and body mass index decreased, and muscle mass compared to fat mass increased.
““After 60 days of administration, an average decrease of 4.97 +/- 0.32 kg (5.7%) was observed in the green coffee bean group compared to the control group, which had an average decrease of 2.45 +/- 0.37 kg (2.9%). As a result, the body mass index of the green coffee bean group significantly decreased compared to the control group. Additionally, the MM/FM (muscle mass to fat mass) ratio significantly increased in the green coffee bean group compared to the control group, at 4.1 +/- 0.7% and 1.6 +/- 0.6%, respectively.””

2. Reduced Appetite
If you decide to lose weight, diet management is most important. It is important to eat healthy food, and in some cases, you may need to reduce the amount of food you eat. Therefore if it is difficult to control your appetite, dieting is bound to be difficult.
I would like to introduce you to the results of human trials showing that green coffee beans help reduce appetite. In this study, patients with metabolic syndrome* took 2 capsules of 400 mg of green coffee bean extract per day for 8 weeks.
*Metabolic syndrome: An individual has three or more of the following: heart disease, diabetes, stroke, high blood pressure, hyperglycemia, hypertriglyceridemia, low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and central obesity.
Not only did the appetite score decrease, but blood pressure and blood sugar levels, which are important indicators for patients with metabolic syndrome, also decreased.
““Compared with placebo, significant reductions were observed with respect to SBP (systolic blood pressure), FBS (fasting blood sugar), HOMA-IR (insulin resistance), waist circumference, and appetite scores after administration of green coffee bean extract.””

Effects of green coffee extract supplementation on anthropometric indices, glycaemic control, blood pressure, lipid profile, insulin resistance and appetite in patients with the metabolic syndrome: a randomised clinical trial. The British journal of nutrition, 119(3), 250–258.
3. Improved Lipid Metabolism
In addition, green coffee beans, like glucose, can improve lipid metabolism to be advantageous for dieting. This is because it activates the decomposition of fat and inhibits the absorption of lipids.
Therefore, human trials [1-2] have been conducted to study the effects of consuming green coffee beans in patients with dyslipidemia or fatty liver who need to improve their blood lipid levels.

I would like to introduce the results of a human application test conducted on patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in 2017. In this study, subjects took 500 mg green coffee bean extract capsules twice a day for 8 weeks. As a result, ALT (liver levels), TG (triglycerides), total cholesterol, FFA (free fatty acids), hs-CRP (inflammatory levels), TAC (total antioxidant capacity), FBS (fasting blood sugar) and HOMA-IR (insulin levels) resistance) was found to be significantly reduced..
The researchers summarized this as follows:
““In summary, the results of this trial show that green coffee bean extract supplementation in patients with NAFLD (non-alcoholic fatty liver disease) has beneficial effects on liver enzymes, insulin resistance, and glucose and lipid metabolism. These beneficial effects may be due to the ability of green coffee bean extract to improve insulin sensitivity and anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.””

Today, we looked at the effects of a diet coffee, green coffee beans. Since it is made from coffee beans, trace amounts of caffeine may cause symptoms such as nervousness or insomnia. Therefore, if you are sensitive to caffeine, you should be careful when consuming it.
In addition, in human application tests using green coffee beans, the test period is usually set at 8 weeks or more. If you are trying to lose weight with green coffee beans, we recommend that you consume it consistently for at least 8 weeks. Of course, if diet management and exercise are combined, it will be healthier and more effective diet..
I hope you have a healthy day both physically and mentally. This was Jinny. .
