Hello. I'm a pharmacist Jinny.
What comes to mind when you think of collagen? Usually, you may think of it as a nutrient for skin health, such as elasticity and wrinkle improvement.
As collagen is widely used as an inner beauty material, there have been reports of people who say that they took collagen for skin care and their hair improved. In fact, since collagen is a major component of human tissues such as hair and cartilage as well as skin, academics are conducting various studies to believe that the consumption of collagen may have a positive effect on hair based on the public's experience.
So today, we're going to take a look at some of the hair-related benefits of collagen that you may not know about.
1. Improves hair dryness and shine
Collagen can be synthesized in the body, but its breakdown speed accelerates due to aging and exposure to ultraviolet rays. The most common symptoms of this condition are the appearance of loose hair and wrinkles on the skin.
In 2014, Nutrition & Food published a study on the effects of collagen-containing supplements on the nails, hair, and outer surface of the skin [1].
"Of the subjects whose initial symptoms were more severe, 95 percent had dry and dull hair, 85 percent had cracked and flaky nails, and 65 percent had significantly improved nail hardness. The authors conclude that this nutritional supplement should be considered an important, effective, and possibly necessary component of a complete hair, nail and skin care regimen."
2. Improves hair thickness
As studies on the effects of collagen intake on various tissues of the human body have progressed, a more intensive study of the relationship between collagen intake and hair was published in Nutrafoods in 2020. This study sheds light on the effects of oral intake of collagen on hair thickness and hair follicle cells [2].
"Oral intake of certain BCPs (bioactive collagen peptides) resulted in a statistically significant increase in hair thickness compared to placebo."
3. Osteoarthritis and cartilage recovery
It's not just your skin and hair that are gradually losing their strength as we age. In particular, there is a growing interest in cartilage and joint health.
In 2020, Rheumatology and Therapy reported a study on the effects of collagen derivatives on osteoarthritis and cartilage repair [3].
"Current evidence suggests that supplementation with collagen derivatives as a food ingredient (oral collagen hydrolysate or raw collagen) or as a drug (intraarticular collagen hydrolysate) may be a potential treatment or support strategy for people with osteoarthritis. (abbreviated)"
Today, we looked at the many benefits of collagen in a paper. Cortisol, a hormone released during stress, breaks down collagen, so in order to keep hair, skin, and other tissues healthy, you need to take care not only of collagen intake but also of stress management.
I hope you have a healthy day in body and mind. It was Jinny.
