Hello. New greetings. This is Jinny, a pharmacist who will introduce my thesis from this week.
Do you know about 'Astaxanthin', which is attracting attention as an emerging eye health ingredient along with lutein It is widely distributed in aquatic animals including crustaceans, and it is also known as an ingredient contained in Hematococcus extract, which has been recognized for its functionality as 'can help improve eye fatigue' by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety. 
However, after reviewing various data, astaxanthin was found to have a variety of health benefits to the extent that it is a waste to say that it is 'good for the eyes'. Therefore, today, we will look at the attractiveness of astaxanthin based on the thesis.
01.  Improvement of dry eye syndrome
Dry eye syndrome refers to a condition in which the surface of the eyeball becomes dry due to insufficient tear production or excessive evaporation of tears. It is easy to think of it as a minor problem, but it can lead to symptoms such as eye and head pain, light blur, and poor vision, so it is a disease that requires constant management throughout life.
A 2016 clinical ophthalmology paper published a paper stating that a supplement containing astaxanthin, bilberry extract, vitamin E, selenium, and zinc can help dry eyes .

“The overall patient assessment, objective measurements, and results of tear reactive oxygen species in this study indicate that this antioxidant supplement may improve general dry eye symptoms through anti-inflammatory effects in patients with dry eye syndrome, and increase tear production and tear film stability. It can mean that you can.”

02.  Improving DNA damage
The benefits of astaxanthin intake are not limited to eye health. Astaxanthin is originally a type of phytochemical and plays a role in removing free radicals, the main culprit of DNA damage. Therefore, academia has focused on this antioxidant action of astaxanthin, and has conducted various studies.
In 2010, Nutrition & Metabolism published a study that found that consumption of a composition containing astaxanthin, lutein, and beta-carotene improved DNA damage .

“The astaxanthin diet dramatically reduced one marker of DNA damage (serum 8-OHdG), and this protective effect was observed over 4 weeks of intake.”

03.  Inflammation and systole and decrease blood pressure
As reports have been accumulating that astaxanthin also removes inflammatory substances , studies have been accumulating to observe changes in inflammatory markers according to astaxanthin intake. 
In the 2020 Clinical Nutrition ESPEN, a study was reported that observed the effects of a composition containing astaxanthin and EPA, an omega-3 type, on inflammation and systolic blood pressure . 

“Inflammatory markers were decreased or blunted by astaxanthin composition intake, with significant increases in EPA levels or fatty acid indices. In addition, systolic blood pressure decreased over 4 weeks with concurrent improvement of endothelial function.”
