The secret to thick hair, what is brewer's yeast?

This is Jinny, the pharmacist.

Do you know about brewer's yeast , which has recently been rumored to be related to hair problems? It is known as the secret to the workers who worked at a beer factory in Germany who had toxic, voluminous and shiny hair .

Brewer's yeast, obtained in the beer manufacturing process, contains more than 40% of protein, and amino acids such as cystine, glutamate, arginine, and glycine, which make up hair , are also distributed. In addition, it also contains B vitamins and minerals such as zinc and selenium, making it an excellent protein source for hair and a very well-balanced, healthy ingredient.

Therefore, today, we will look at the various effects of brewer's yeast through human application tests.

1. Improve skin condition
Have you ever experienced an ingredient that you thought was good for your skin, but when you tried it, it was good for your hair, or vice versa? This is because more than 70% of the components of hair and skin are proteins. Therefore , if you supplement with high-quality protein, it can help  improve both hair and skin condition .

A study published in ANTI-AGING MEDICINE in 2010 reported that consumption of  brewer 's yeast may help improve skin condition

“Physical symptoms such as menstrual problems and skin symptoms such as easy makeup loss or dry and rough skin were also significantly improved in proportion to the dose from the control group. Skin analysis (SKI) showed increased moisture content, reduced erythema and increased elasticity, while PSI showed increased moisture and reduced pores.”

2. Improves symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome
Brewer's yeast is dried yeast (yeast bacteria) in the genus Saccharomyces that is separated after filtering beer . Therefore, studies have been conducted on whether probiotics, beneficial bacteria that play a beneficial role in the human body, can help improve various symptoms related to intestinal health.

In 2019, a paper was published in the Asian Journal of Pharmaceutical and Clinical Research  that investigated whether brewer's yeast intake could help improve symptoms in subjects with constipation-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-C) .

“A within-group analysis showed clinically significant reductions in abdominal pain, abdominal distension, and symptoms of constipation in the brewer’s yeast group compared to the placebo group after the 20-day study.”

3. Improvement of glycemic parameters in patients with type 2 diabetes
Unlike type 1 diabetes, in which insulin production is impossible, type 2 diabetes is a disease in which insulin production is possible but insulin resistance increases. Here, increased insulin resistance refers to a condition in which our body does not respond properly to insulin, which puts glucose in the blood into cells. The opposite concept of insulin resistance is insulin sensitivity, the degree to which our body responds sensitively to insulin .

In 2013, in the International journal of preventive medicine,  a research paper was published on type 2 diabetic patients divided into brewer's yeast group and placebo group to determine whether brewer's yeast as a glucose tolerance factor in diabetic patients has a beneficial effect on insulin receptors

“During the study period, changes in FBS (fasting blood glucose), glycosylated hemoglobin, and insulin sensitivity showed significant differences between the two groups. After removing the influence of the reference value, there were significant differences in fasting blood sugar, HbA1c, and insulin sensitivity at the end of the study between the two groups.”

Today, through research, we looked at the health benefits of brewer's yeast. If you have difficulty in supplementing with proper nutrition due to irregular eating habits, it would be nice to try it at least once.
I hope you have a healthy day in body and mind. It was Jinny.
