Banaba Leaf Extract

Introducing banaba leaves for blood sugar control

Banaba leaf extract efficacy
1. Decreased blood sugar
2. Decreased triglycerides and increased HDL cholesterol
3. Decreased weight

This is Jinny, the pharmacist.

Recently, as the number of diabetic patients in their 20s and 30s increases, interest in 'diabetes and blood sugar control' seems to be increasing among all age groups. So today, I would like to introduce banaba leaf extract, an ingredient that can help control blood sugar .

Banaba is a tree native to Southeast Asia, and its leaves have long been used as a folk remedy for diabetes management in Southeast Asia. In fact , banaba leaves are known to help control blood sugar because there is a component called corosolic acid that promotes the transport of glucose into cells .

The academic world has also paid attention to the efficacy of banaba leaves and has conducted several studies, including blood sugar-related studies. Today, let's take a look at that with me.

1. Reduce blood sugar

Glucose transporter 4 (GLUT4) promotes the transport of glucose into cells and lowers blood glucose concentration . So, if the movement of GLUT4 towards the cell membrane is inhibited, insulin resistance or type 2 diabetes may occur. Corosolic acid helps regulate blood sugar by activating GLUT4 .

In fact, a paper published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology in 2003 revealed that blood sugar was significantly reduced when banaba leaf extract was orally administered to patients with type 2 diabetes .

" Banaba leaf extract (Glucosol™) was shown to significantly reduce blood sugar levels at daily doses of 32 mg and 48 mg for 2 weeks. "

2. Reduces triglycerides and increases HDL cholesterol

Unlike other cholesterol levels, HDL cholesterol plays a role in preventing arteriosclerosis by transporting cholesterol accumulated in the walls of blood vessels to the liver, so the higher the better. On the other hand, triglycerides help create LDL cholesterol, which is bad for blood vessel health, and promote the decomposition of HDL cholesterol, increasing the risk of arteriosclerosis.

According to a paper published in High Blood Pressure & Cardiovascular Prevention in 2017, triglycerides decreased and HDL cholesterol increased when subjects with fasting blood sugar disorders were given banaba leaf extract .

" Though triglycerides decreased in both groups, it decreased more in the group treated with nutraceuticals (banaba leaf extract) than in the control group. Compared to the others, it was improved only in the nutraceutical treatment group. "

3. Weight loss

Corosolic acid promotes the adiponectin hormone, which helps in weight loss . This is because adiponectin inhibits fatty acid synthesis and gluconeogenesis in the liver and promotes glucose uptake and catabolism in muscle and liver. In other words, adiponectin inhibits the synthesis of fat and increases its usage .

A paper published in 2006 reported weight loss and improvement in body mass index (BMI) when banaba leaf extract was consumed .

"Weight loss and BMI improvement were also observed after 2 weeks of banaba extract administration. "

Today, through a thesis, we looked at the benefits of consuming banaba leaf extract. Banaba leaf extract lowers blood sugar, so if you are already taking blood sugar-lowering drugs, you should be careful as blood sugar levels may go down too much .

I hope you have a healthy day in body and mind. It was Jinny.
